PT Countdown, day 76: Osmium!

Thanks O.J.

Periodic Table Countdown! Join us as we count our way down to Hydrogen and the kick off of Clemson Football 2025!

Element 76 is Osmium!

Yesterday’s element, iridium, was the second-most dense naturally occurring element. Today’s is the most dense, about twice the density of lead. It is also the most stable of all the elements.

Because it is so dense, adding the metal to alloys increases their hardness making them useful in the manufacture of ballpoint and fountain pen nibs*, and other devices prone to frequent wear and tear.

It’s difficult to find any connections between Clemson and osmium, since osmium is so rare (making up only 50 parts per trillion in the Earth’s crust), however there is a 2010 doctoral dissertation that involved isotopes of the element found in silicon carbide (SiC) grains created before the beginning of our solar system:
https://open.clemson.edu/all_dissertations/572/

A discussion of pre-solar grains can be found on Wikipedia:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Presolar_grains

*in 1922 Osmia bought a patented osmium alloy from a Heidelberg metallurgical professor. It was then a wonder tipping. The reason they named their company, Osmia.

Todays player spotlight is #76 Mason Wade. He is a redshirt freshmen offensive linemen for the 2025 Clemson Tigers.

In 2024 he played “in three games and played 29 offensive snaps while redshirting … played 13 snaps in his collegiate debut vs. Appalachian State … played 16 snaps in Clemson’s 59-point effort vs. NC State.”

He was a “four-year starter at left tackle (for Loudoun Vally HS) who was a two-time team captain (2022-23) and named as the team’s MVP as a senior in 2023”. He “completed his prep career holding records in the bench press, clean and three-cone drill in the school’s 62-year history” and “averaged double-digit pancakes per game as a senior according to Loudoun Valley’s coaching staff”.

Here are some fun facts about Mason Wade. He used to play rugby while he was growing up. He had a 4.0 GPA in high school. He initially committed to Duke before signing with Clemson.

I’ve got 3 true freshmen offensive linemen lined up to post for my player spotlight on here within the next 4 days. Mason could very well be competing with those 3 freshmen once camp starts back this August. I honestly love that the OL is finally coming together for Clemson. Matt Luke has done a great job coaching up our protection for Cade.

76 Seasons Ago Clemson Football Finished 4-4-2 in 1949

Clemson’s extended winning streak reaches 15 straight wins before the Good Guys lose a game. (I suppose that all good things eventually come to an end!)

Overview:

According to Wikipedia:

“he 1949 Clemson Tigers football team was an American football team that represented Clemson College in the Southern Conference during the 1949 college football season. In its tenth season under head coach Frank Howard, the team compiled a 4–4–2 record (2–2 against conference opponents), tied for seventh place in the Southern Conference, and outscored opponents by a total of 232 to 216.”

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1949_Clemson_Tigers_football_team

Worthy of Note:

Wikipedia provides the following insights on the 1949 season:

“The team's statistical leaders included wingback Ray Mathews with 487 passing yards and 728 rushing yards and fullback Fred Cone with 55 points scored (9 touchdowns an 1 extra point).

Center Gene Moore was the team captain. Fullback Fred Cone and wingback Ray Mathews were selected as first-team players on the 1949 All-Southern Conference football team. Cone, Mathews, and end John Poulos were named to the All-South Carolina football team for 1949.”

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1949_Clemson_Tigers_football_team

ClemsonTigers.com adds the following insights:

“Nov. 26, 1949 – Clemson closed out the decade of the 1940s with a 20-20 tie against Auburn in Mobile, Ala. Clemson had just a 4-4-2 record but closed 2-0-1 over the last three games, giving the program momentum heading into the 1950 season.”

https://clemsontigers.com/clemson-football-historical-timeline/

However: ClemsonWiki makes a claim that seems to need updating:

September 24: Rice University snaps Clemson's longest winning streak at fifteen games with a 7-33 victory over the Tigers in a night game played in Houston. Rice will enjoy a 10-1 season.

https://clemsonwiki.com/wiki/1949

Hey ClemsonWiki:
I am pretty sure that 15 game winning streak is no longer Clemson’s longest winning streak! The 2018-2019 Clemson Tigers put up an amazing 29 game wining streak!
- Still a 15 game winning strak was also amazing in its own right!

Clemson legend Fred Cone was a junior in 1949. Clemson Tigers.com provides a great story about Fred Cone coming to Clemson (not exactly “recruited” to Clemson):

“He came to Clemson without having played a down of high school football. It is perhaps the most unusual story concerning an athlete’s journey to Clemson. Cone was visiting his sister at Biloxi, MS, far from the haunts of his hometown, an obscure place called Pineapple, AL.

Unbeknown to Clemson Head Coach Frank Howard, Cone’s sister lived next door to Howard’s sister, Hazel, in Biloxi. On years when Clemson would play Tulane in New Orleans, Howard would send Hazel a pair of tickets. “One year she sent the two tickets back,” Howard remembered, “and said she’d like to have four tickets because she wanted to take the next-door neighbor to the game.”

That was in 1946, Cone’s senior year in high school. After Cone graduated, Hazel wrote him a letter. “Brother, I have you a good football player, but he’s never played football.”

Howard recalled that he had told the Clemson registrar to save him 40 beds in the barracks and that Howard would turn in that many names on September 1.

“When Hazel wrote me about Fred Cone, I had 39 names on that list. So I just wrote ‘Fred Cone’ in as the 40th name. And that’s how I got probably the best, if not the best, football player I ever had.”

https://clemsontigers.com/fred-cone/

With the loss to the Gamechickens, Clemson’s record in the series moved to 29-16-2.

Also in 1949:

According to ClemsonWiki:

“Fall: Clemson Agricultural College sees a record enrollment of 3,360, swollen by post-war veterans. Following this peak, the student body will shrink for several years, hastening the demise of the military corps structure and operation of the college.”

https://clemsonwiki.com/wiki/1949

And, also in 1949, according to another ClemsonWiki page:

May 5, 1949: The Tiger newspaper reported that Tiger Brotherhood selected Mrs. Paul Sloan (Lenora) Rochester, from Salem, S.C., as Clemson's first "mother of the year." She was selected because she had the most sons (six) graduate from Clemson.
