If you look at the replay , he didn’t miss the block. The blitzer came on a delayed blitz and Mafah was headed out to the left side on a route. It was perfectly timed and if anyone is to blame it’s Cade for lack of vision and pocket awareness. He never saw the guy either and he had the best view by far , but was locked in on Mafah going out on a route.

I actually blame the OC for calling a drop back pass when we are in FG range . Maybe a quick dump pass or a rollout , but nothing that can be a negative play when you have the opportunity to go up by 2 scores at that point in the game.

Well send a note to coach since he said that the running back missed his block on that play. He’ll need to know that you changed the play.

Yes. That’s exactly what happened. But there are a few committed haters on this board that are sticking with this narrative despite it being specifically addressed by Coach Swinney in postgame.

That could have been the case , but it’s the QBs responsibility to call the blocking coverage and make sure the RB knows his assignment. My guess is Cade didn’t call it . From the look of the replay, Mafah had no clue to stay in. I still go back to why in the hell are we calling a drop back right there. We were in FG range.

he whiffed on his assignment badly.

There was no delay, the defender started his rush on the snap.

Even Mafah's option release was bad as he did so into LB coverage.

I was in the car listening on radio when the play happened (i’m not a real fan) and the radio team called it on Mafah immediately. I understand the view is better from section UR though and I’ve also learned it’s only a “whiff” if the player actually attempts the block. Just ignoring your assignment altogether is not the same thing.

The RG was zone blocking and correctly did not leave his box, anticipating a stunt or blitz, which came from an ILB, and was picked up. The OLB showing man coverage on a WR, who also blitzed, would typically be the responsibility of the back. Mafah actually appears to be watching the DE on the left side of our line who dropped into coverage. He did not even look to the right side. When he determined, incorrectly, that there was no threat, he released and went out as a safety valve receiver. It looks like Mafah made a mistake. It happens, but unfortunately it set off a chain of events that killed our momentum.

The photo don’t lie. The “blitzer” was 20 yards to the r right when the ball was snapped . It was perfectly timed . Cade didn’t call for Max protection so CDS throwing Mafah under the bus is total BS. He needs to take a look in the mirror and fix his own problems. As for FG range, CDS said previously that Gunn had 60 yard plus range. I didn’t say he’d make it , but we were well within his range.

The play call demands Mafah pick up the hot. Period.

6

Sep 25, 2023, 8:47 AM [ in reply to Re: did mafah get benched for the missed block scoop/score? ]

The defender did not delay, he left on snap. You originally said he delayed, which had held no sway on the play call and Mafah's assignment. The hot is his first, last and always assignment and that is the very why he was called on it.

The snap. Defender already leaving.

Mafah squats, head supposed to be on a swivel, yet doesn't look right at the 5 yard hole and the defender bearing down. The OL was dead, solid, perfect on this play, picture perfect, but was betrayed by the RB.

Mafah whiffs on his assignment and instead hurries into his option release, and yet, not even into space. That option is only after he's accounted for any and all hot[s].

And he continues to run into the LB coverage instead of space. It's Mafah bad all over.

Please stop - the coaches, the team, Mafah and others know what went down. It happens, unfortunately a critical mistake once again haunts the Tigers.

Re: The play call demands Mafah pick up the hot. Period.

You guys are probably right . They probably benched him after that mistake. That explains why he was unavailable to run it on 3rd and 1 foot in the OT. Better to just call an RPO and leave it up to Cade to make that decision.

Sep 25, 2023, 11:36 AM

so the passion around it follows, but it's simple as to why the HOT was free to beeline unmolested to our QB.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Except clearly it didn't

4

Sep 25, 2023, 11:13 AM [ in reply to The play call demands Mafah pick up the hot. Period. ]

Mafah was clearly drifting into a designed screen, while Cade was staring down a double-covered receiver from the snap. Which one was actually called, we will never know unless they tell us, but if he hits Mafah here for the screen that Mafah was clearly running, it's a huge gain.

Cade staring down a receiver is more the reason he got blasted from the right than Mafah, even if Mafah was on the wrong play.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-20yr.jpgringofhonor-obed.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Designed screen? It's an option release, which is only...

2

Sep 25, 2023, 11:18 AM

an option after he accounts for any free hats = hot.

He failed his assignment miserably and it cost Clemson 6.

They told us Mafah missed his assignment, it was clear to me, the announcers and many others. Mafah does exactly as he's taught after the mesh, squat and look for a hot. Why he doesn't look right is for Mafah to explain, but it was a catastrophic failure.

Mafah squatting after the mesh, not looking right to pick up the HOT. It's clear he whiffed on his assignment. It happens, but making excuses for it shouldn't.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

No, I'm saying Mafah was running a completely different play

2

Sep 25, 2023, 11:23 AM

than Cade was, rightly or wrongly. He slipped directly into drifting through the line, there weren't even any checks to be made in his mind.

If Cade is, even for a millisecond, looking at something other than his primary for the entirety of the play, he steps up in the pocket, avoids the blitz, and gets the 1st down plus 10 or 15 more.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-20yr.jpgringofhonor-obed.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I didn't believe so then or after watching it again...

1

Sep 25, 2023, 11:33 AM

the coaches confirmed it.

Mafah did not slip immediately into the wash, he squatted as his assignment called for, but didn't swivel right. I don't know why, he's taught to do so, but that's why any that might know better are saying it. There's no confusion on the play, well other than a missed assignment and unfortunately it was a very costly one. What adds salt, the OL stoned the defensive play, but were betrayed by the RB there.

If and only if all hats are accounted for is Mafah allowed the option to release as a safety valve. Personally, I didn't even like his choice of releases as he ran into the defender who dropped into the area.

And Cade knows Mafah's assignment, there was not a man coming from the offensive right that should not have had a hat on them. Again, Mafah failed the play. It happens.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

What did the coaches say?

2

Sep 25, 2023, 11:50 AM

That's the one piece I haven't heard. Can't say I've listened exhaustively to all their comments but I've heard a bunch and hadn't heard that addressed. Would be curious to know their comments (although they have a tendency to oversimplify assigning blame--see hanging Cade out to dry for the 3rd and 1 without mentioning Collins not even pretending to block on the screen).

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-20yr.jpgringofhonor-obed.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

They called him on the missed assignment, whether he

1

Sep 25, 2023, 12:03 PM

was off schedule play wise, or on it, the end result was the same - a critical missed assignment.

Complete conjecture, but most spreads like to take shots on the plus side of the 50 because space becomes a premium and makes those offenses uncomfortable as they near the end line.

FSU's defensive staff timed that call up perfectly.

As for Cade and Mafah, it's hard to play the what if game beyond the critical moment, which is the initial decision. You run plays because you trust your players to play assignment football or make critical choices in critical moments.

Over the years it was pretty obvious the staff controlled things from the sidelines and box more for KB2 and DJU. The call on 3rd and 1 is putting faith in your QB because of that trust.

My time in football had a saying of "no block, no rock", which went for any TE, RB, WR. It was designed to create desire. A lot of these guys were never asked to block in HS and when they are now, it's uncomfortable to watch.

Collins will be called out for his effort in film, of that I've no doubt.

1

that he would never get that much free time in the pocket.

Mafah waited, but also slid up too close to the line and released. Cade's head was turned for the home run ball. It looks like he may have had a chance, but held the throw too long.

50/50, both responsible IMHO.

kids make mistakes. They're a team and had some screwy plays-and there were plenty of baffling play calls. However, these are 18-21 kidn...but 1 FG would have sealed the deal. However 1 FG put us up by 3. Great job by that kid! However, kickers are critical and we seem to struggle year in and out.
Dabo used to give Potter hell who finally worked out most of his issues. Anyone recruit kickers. Anyone "coach" kickers? USuC seems to have good kickers year in and year out. What do they do that we don't. We develop players at every other position but we can't coach up a kicker? I don't get it. If anyone does, please enlighten me. I'd really like to understand the process
