Dabo has to go after this guy. This is the type of game changer that you get out of the portal, not some backup OL that never plays a snap.

Agreed.
1. He was a flipper as a recruit and now he’s transferring. He’s clearly chasing a bag and that’s not us.
2. Safety isn’t an area of concern. DE and OL depth are. I still can’t believe we are going into this season with no one besides Parker as a legitimate DE.

us once. All you Portal watchers need to get it through your heads, Dabo Swinney is NOT going to live and die by the Portal, despite all your entreaties to the contrary. We will be back this coming year, and I fervently hope that may finally quiet some of this Portal angst.

Someone suggests that Clemson pursue a player in the portal, and people like you respond as if the suggestion was to build a team entirely of transfers.
No one here has EVER said that they want Clemson to rely exclusively or even mostly on the transfer portal.
However, we can and should be using the portal every year to address roster needs. Sometimes, players don't pan out, or they we have injuries, and an experienced guy from the portal could help.
Maybe one day Dabo will get with the times and start taking advantage of this opportunity - one that literally every other FBS school does.

Serious question - are we weak at Safety? I honestly can't assess. This Tigernet article seems to think we have plenty of returning talent and are fine on depth (given that the assumption it started with, that RJ Mickens was leaving, turned out to be false?):

there are potential solutions in the portal which largely go ignored for one reason or another.
Assuming that the portal is always a "bidding war" is ridiculous. But if that's true, isn't high school recruiting also a bidding war? Dabo hasn't shunned high school recruits like he has transfers.

Regardless...yes...we all get it. You think it's a resource he should utilize more. And Dabo disagrees. And the continuous posts about the latest portal entry being a "must look at" kid won't change Dabo's philosophy.

I would like to see us use the portal to fill a need when feasible. However, I realize that players enter the portal for a reason.
Some are not getting the playing time they want so why should we think they will make the grade at Clemson? Some are looking for more NIL money. Clemson probably won’t satisfy that desire. Some think the grass is greener elsewhere, and I would be concerned that they aren’t really “All In” because they may have their eye on the next pasture. Some are just prima donnas that I wouldn’t want on the team anyway.
But if we find the right fit, someone who fulfills a need, who’s willing to make a commitment to the program, who has the right character, and perhaps just made a mistake in their original choice, then I’m all for it.
Unfortunately, I think those players are few and far between in the portal, and likely that’s the problem we face.

Clemson don’t need the portal. Clemson not losing games because of players, its mistakes. Clemson recruits well and it’s all about the culture at Clemson. Just get the right coaches in position to develop what you have. Y’all talk as if Clemson need the portal for starters

Clemson was to build a program that OTHER schools wanted to copy. He did exactly that. He built an internal culture, which he nutures and guards at all times, so that it continues on in his vision.
He will get a player, or players out of the Portal only when they fit exactly what he is looking for as young MEN first, and players second. And, I daresay, any player whose first conversation is about money will take himself off our potential board right then. And, guess what? I have absolutely no problem with that. I happen to believe that there is a pool of top tier talent out there that still believes in what Clemson is selling, a pool large enough that we can remain who we are without many, if ANY substitutions from the Transfer Portal.
You can say I am against the Transfer Portal, but you would be wrong. I AM against the many ways the Transfer Portal is being used right now, far above and beyond what it was ever originally intended for. It, plus NIL as they both stand right now, have brought forth a situation that is financially unsustainable for the healthy future of college football. What we have is unlimited free agency with no contracts, and no salary cap, and, let's face it, no policing at all. It is FAR worse than the old "Wild Wild West" days of recruiting back when SMU was given the death penalty. Players could not freely move around then, like they can now.
I don't pretend to have answers to these problems. But, I think I am astute enough to realize that college football right now does have SERIOUS problems, life threatening problems, that SOMEONE in a position of authority better take the reins on, sooner rather than later. And, the Transfer Portal / NIL combination is at the top of that list.
