Dabo didn't used to be "play not to lose*. Now that defines his game plans.

What happened? I can't figure out what caused him to change. It permeates Clemson's culture.

It’s a great question. I was wondering myself when that changed. We used to go after it so hard opposing coaches wanted to fight us. Now we coach scared.

My Theory: When people achieve the highest success and make lots of money, they often move out of growth mode and into preservation mode. They play prevent defense and clock management.
It sure feels like Dabo is in preservation mode. We’ll win 8-10 a year while Dabo is still leading in preservation mode.

But this was the right call. They had three timeouts at half.

You let the clock run and take a final shot for the end zone.

You are so right!!!! It all started about 5 years ago and he has become so conservative and close to the vest it is choking the entire organization. The Coot game today was a perfect example. We had this game in the bag and the passing game was working beautifully......until it wasn't. You could see the shift in philosophy as they went away from the medium and longe range strikes and returned to the middle runs and WR screens. So frustrating!!!!! I am sick and tired of hearing about the "Clemson System" and coaching coming in to run the "Clemson System".....enough already. Let em play coach. That's what we pay them for!

I think he knows he doesn’t haveDW4 or TL16 to execute nor does he have a crushing D to cover if it goes bad. But yeah the play it safe game is really sad.

Dabo has always played not to lose frequently. Not all the time, mind you, but it's never been rare for him. His tendencies related to aggressive/conservative have not uniformly been one or the other. Rather, his tendency is to always do the opposite of what is appropriate in the situation. When conservative, careful play-calling and strategy are called for, he gets aggressive. When aggression is called for, he gets uber-conservative.
It so happens that b/c we've had anemic offenses lately, the aggression has been what's needed more often than not, and thus, more often than not, he's been uber-conservative.
I'll never forget us PASSING the ball with 2nd and goal inside the 5 vs. Pitt and with an 8 point lead. We lost, b/c Dabo, (or Elliot, with Dabo's approval), didn't realize that what was called for was to play very conservative so as to eliminate the likelihood of a turnover and get at least 3 to seal the win. Mindless aggression won out,and was the wrong call. Dabo's always made these calculations backwards.

Dabo did play to win today - that should be obvious

I mean, if Dabo was playing not to lose, then we’d have run the ball instead of throwing the errant pass that was pik’d on what turned out to be our final play.
Instead of positioning ourself for an easy game-tieing FG, we kept trying to get a TD. (We’d have attempted one more play for a TD if the errant pass to Mafah wasn’t our final play.)
