I would have never allowed the kicker back on the field on 4th and short yardage (I wouldn't have even put him out there on the first attempt that he missed), but Dabo believes in him and knew he needed to make a FG to help us later. I don't know that he goes out and drills that 56 yarder if Dabo keeps him out on the earlier attempt that he drilled.
Two other points: It was driving me crazy we weren't running more time off the play clock with a two or more possession lead, even in the first half, knowing we would be getting the ball to start second half. I think you have to shorten the game, especially with a fast paced offensive opponent where defense needs every minute of rest in between series. I don't think it made the difference last night, other than SMU would have been in more of a hurry on their last drive. We were snapping the ball with over 20 seconds left on play clock most of the plays and Cade even through the ball away one time before running out of bounds where it would have only cost us half a yard.
I appreciate the irony of this next point, but why would we try returning kickoffs, knowing the average field position is well short of 25 yard line, so many create block in the back penalties, and unfortunately for us, can also result in an injury to a key player. There weren't any signs that we have a game changer return man, so why risk putting your offense in such bad field position. Obviously the last one was different, with just 16 seconds, there was nothing to lose, but any other time, I would say fair catch every time.
These are the points I was ready to post if we blew our lead and lost the game, so only fair to post what I would have done different when we win - kind of to say maybe sometimes the coaches and players either know better or lucked out doing it their way!
Go Tigers! I think it's going to be good for us being the underdogs this year in the playoffs!
