The guy standing on the left is grandfather of RB. He's standing next to two other non-coms in his unit, I don't have their names. He was a simple farmboy from outside of Orangeburg, SC who was in the 5th Ranger Battalion. They were first on the beach in Normandy. I can't even begin to imagine what those men had to endure that day. This pic was taken in early March of 1945 in Hohenlepte, Germany. He made it off the beach, through France, and into Germany. He had been promoted to Sgt. by war's end due to casualties, attrition, etc. One of the few times he did talk about the war, which was practically never, he mentioned to me the time he had literally come face to face with a panzergrenadier in Normandy. He got real quiet for a while.......then switched the subject and was talking about the corn he had just planted. That was kind of how he was. Never talked much about it, but I could tell it haunted him. He never went back to Normandy after the war. Said it was too painful for him. The more I learn about what his unit went through, and the casualty rate they suffered, the more I grow to be in awe of that man. God bless those men.

My uncle was on the helicopter gunner going on to Normandy. Crazy the stories, he had a huge beautiful sea Turtle that was killed on the beach Taxidermy, it was huge, he put glass on top of the shell and it was his coffee table in his living room during my childhood.
It was a reminder of the sacrifices made on that day for the whole family.
Thank you to all who gave all including the animals.

I think the memory of the men who served as well as died that day deserve some reverence. You, on the other hand, don't. OK. To each his own I suppose.

I think I recall you have posted this before? I would like to say Thanks for posting again. They live on through us!
May this nation always respect and thank those who served, and especially those who made the ultimate sacrifice for this great nation.
God Bless them and God Bless America.

Thanks for posting. My grandfather was there as well. Utah Beach. Later wounded by a sniper. He never spoke about it much either.

If you ever have the opportunity to visit Normandy I say don’t pass it up. To stand on the beach or the cliffs and try to imagine what happened is both frightening and inspirational. The guides are special and are factual. Visiting the cemetery is very moving. My dad was not in the D-Day invasion. He was in North Africa, Sicily, and Italy with Patton.
