Here's a thought on how this NIL and transfer portal crap

might get brought under control. Some states are starting to say the players and schools have an employee/employer relationship. Well sir, if that is the case, the employer can institute a no compete clause..the lawyers on here need to weigh in. The first thing that is going to happen is that the student athletes in tennis, golf, soccer, baseball, swimming, track, field hockey, lacrosse that don't make jack on NIL will raise cain. But, if employee/employer takes hold, then if I am the AD, I would have my lawyers draft a contract with the players. There is no way, as AD, in charge of keeping boosters and fans, the lifeblood of the schools athletic programs (regardless of what the players think), that I am going to support players receiving thousands of dollars, some millions, in NIL, the best training facilities, the best nutrition, the best tutoring, etc., and those players can develop themselves on MY DIME, so to speak, and then bolt at ANY point in time.
I may be off base here, but the schools have to take back some manner of control. Mickey just said West Virginia has 24 players in the transfer portal. If you want to see Dabo bolt for the NFL, well sir, if college ball gets to where you are responsible for professional athletes that have no loyalty to the school, then he might as well go on to the pros and cash in. At least in the pros, the players are held responsible for their off field conduct, and the teams have control of who they play for. No coach is going to be able to have a successful program, on a consistent basis, if the players can leave on a moments notice. As it stands right now, a coach and his entire staff have to remain in a constant revcruiting mode with their own players.....That seems impossible to me.

Right if I were in the NFL I would be jealous of college football. You can play for whoever you want, leave whenever you want, and take as much money as you want. Craziest part about if people still talk about the players like they are victims.

Any kind of contract would the end of major college football unless it was a national policy because of a player's right to earn money. If you were a recruit and South Carolina required a contract but Florida was an NIL state, how many recruits would we get? Change happens and everyone needs to be patient but unless there are tax issues with NIL, it is what it is because athletes would sue and win if someone tried to stop it.
As far as the portal, coaches will have to learn how to deal with it. The one change I would like to see is moving the deadline from May 1 to an earlier date which would help both the player find a school and the school he is leaving to find a replacement.

Either student athletes are employees of the university or they are students who participate on a sports team. If they are employees, then go ahead and pay them, but there shouldn't be a requirement to attend classes and receive grades. The maintenance guy at the physical plant doesn't have to attend classes to work at the university. If they are students, then they need to attend classes and receive grades just like any other student. They need to follow the rules of the sport as laid down by their university. If there is 'no controlling authority' (as Al Gore used to say), such as NIL, then the entire system is ripe for chaos, which will alter or destroy college sports as we know it, especially the big revenue sports. I am enough of a philosopher to believe that whatever happens will happen, and I have no ability to control events in this matter. However I, and I assume, a large segment of college football fans will rapidly lose interest in the sport because of the changes. Maybe the powers that be know what they are doing, but they probably are just chasing the almighty dollar. At least it looks that way to me. I don't expect this to end well unless someone, somehow takes charge and changes the trajectory.

I also think that once a player's NIL equals the amount of support provided by their scholarship the money should go to reimburse the school. That seems only fair to me since the scholy gives the player a platform on which to earn their NIL.

I agree 100%. Without the school, they are basically nothing. The NFL is not like the NBA or MLB, you do not see High School Athletic going straight to the pro’s. They should have to repay the school for part of if not all if they earn more than the value on their scholarship because without the facilities and other potential perks, they aren’t nothing but a average High School Athlete.
