I remember this day years back. It was a big day for me. I’d been preparing for it for weeks. This was the interview for the job I’d always wanted. I’d done my homework. I’d practiced my answers and cleaned up my resume. Even got a career coach!
Well I put on my best suit - my only suit. Jumped in the car and started driving. Everything was fine for a little while. Turned out my Mapquest directions were bad. And I was 15 minutes in the wrong direction before I’d figured it out. Then I took a chance on a rogue fart. And you guessed it. Things didn’t go my way. So now I needed to stop by my apartment, iron a different set of pants and hit the road again. Yeah I’d be a couple minutes late but not too bad. At least I knew the right way to go this time… but then I hit traffic. I got there 25 minutes late. They were kind enough to interview me but I knew I had blown it. I was rattled and never recovered. It just wasn’t my day.
Now did that mean I was done for and destined for failure - not a chance. Did I feel like it in the moment, you better believe I did. But a few weeks later the next opportunity came along and I nailed it.
Folks sometimes you just fart and fall down. Does it mean your team sucks? Sometimes it does. And sometimes it just means it wasn’t your night.
The good news is we will get to see in a couple of weeks which one it is. Now I can be negative - which I’m inclined to do. Or I can make the harder choice and just optimism. Either way, it’s time to iron that other pair of pants and get back to the grind.
