“Where are the game-breaking receivers like Mike Williams, Tee Higgins and Hunter Renfrow? Where are the multi-talented running backs who could stress your defense like Travis Etienne and Wayne Gallman? After maximizing generational quarterbacks in Deshaun Watson and Trevor Lawrence, why has Clemson seemingly missed on their successors?
“The big-time playmakers just aren’t there.
“Is that a result of NIL making it easier for non-traditional schools to compete for talent? Is it Swinney’s reluctance to fill roster holes by using the transfer portal? Did Clemson’s knack for finding hidden gems in recruiting just dry up overnight?
“It’s probably all of that, along with some arrogance and a failure to recognize how quickly the sport was changing around them.
“But there’s no mistaking it now: After a couple seasons where they were still good but clearly trending in the wrong direction, the Clemson program Swinney built is really broken. It wasn’t a fluke when Clemson became a national title contender, and this isn't a fluke, either. It’s the result of mistakes and neglect that have added up over years, and it should be obvious now that Swinney needs a hard reset.
“As proud and stubborn as he has always been, is Swinney even capable of a full overhaul at this stage of his career? He better be because right now Clemson is just another mediocre ACC program.” https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/college/columnist/dan-wolken/2023/10/29/clemson-dabo-swinney-college-football-week-9-misery-index/71369239007/

He has always shown a willingness to change. He did this past offseason in bringing in Riley. Riley just hasn’t worked out as a hire.

I agree. Riley is doing what he can with what he’s got. Hiring Riley only addressed a symptom imo.

Cute. He’ll only make true substantive “hard reset” changes after he bankrupts the company. Forbes CEO of the year. Completely tone deaf and went all in on his way or the highway.

I can’t say I disagree with any of this. It’s pretty obvious to everyone except a few who refuse to accept it.

Now the whole football universe sees it.
I hope Dabo is ready to take a really hard look at this program. It's needs more than a hot-shot OC.

after years we struggled. He did go out and hire Riley. Now since Riley didn’t work out he needs to bring back Jeff Scott

He fixes one thing to placate the fans.
While leaving four other obvious issues untouched. That’s stubborn.
Now, it’s so bad he’s going to have to clean house to fix what he broke.

I've commented about this many times. Yes, we don't have a Spiller/Etienne/Williams/Watkins/Higgins/Trevor/Deshaun ... but our problems are deeper than that. Think about it this way ... Given that fact, we don't have any of those generational game-breaking superstars, how many Deshaun Watsons or Sammy Watkins does Duke have? How many Trevor Lawrences or CJ Spillers did NCST have yesterday? How many Tee HIggins or Etiennes did Miami have?
Here's my point. These teams that we are losing to DO NOT HAVE GENERATIONAL SUPERSTAR TALENT. FSU is the most talented team we have played, and even though we shot ourselves in the foot, we were not at a significant talent deficit to them. We barely squeaked by Wake Freaking Forest; I dare anybody to make a case for Wake having generational superstar NFL talent.
Clemson not having those players does NOT explain why teams who still have inarguably less talent are beating us and hanging with us. Something else is clearly happening.

Without those type players, the coaching staff here is inadequate and needs to be vastly upgraded.

of talent we have, and it can't be explained by turnovers. Clearly, teams with less talent perform better, against us.
It only makes sense to question the coaching.

The something else is that the NFL generational talent was covering up flaws that we have always had.

He’s saying exactly what we’ve been saying for 4-5 weeks. But we’re not really fans. Most graduated 10-40 yrs ago but we’re bandwagon fans? Those that are still shouting rah rah and get behind this great team that is a few mistakes away from greatness are dumb blondes. All our venting here is nothing more than a frustration outlet. Write Neff and rip his complacent rear a new one.

Confidence, maybe. But not arrogant.
Wolken has an ad hominem element to his style that's always off-putting.
Other than that, he's spot on this time.

I think we've just hit a confluence of things going bad together
2

after a stretch where they went went great together.
WR's hit a bunch of injuries that delayed development, and none have panned out so far to be game breakers, mainly the big guys. We had a stream of guys that developed into incredible wr's and I think the latest batch didn't, even though their measurables were comparable. I will note here, though, that the dropoff in WR blocking from 2020 to later was noticeable and drastic.
The OL is struggling to move people in run blocking and too often misses blitzers (or rb's do) and gets beat with speed moves. This is a physical problem which needs more development or different personnel.
And the last 2 5 star QB's aren't turning out to be anywhere near as good as the previous 2 in all the intangible-yet-valuable aspects of qb play. In a combine setting DJ and Cade would look all-world just like Trevor and Deshaun. THeir actual play is lacking from the mental aspects of play that are largely inherent.
This run of finding ways to lose also shows how fragile winning is, and how much the measurable, physical aspects of football are more evenly spread and the skill and knowledge portion becomes the difference, like in the NFL.
Those of you that keep insisting on here that "Dabo needs to" this or that are wasting your keystrokes. Dabo is coach and will do what he thinks best. Unlike TOmmy Bowden, Dabo doesn't coach with or against the fans, he just ignores our highly thought out and clever suggestions, which he should.
