4 technique

This week with BC's running game does Venables take us back to the 4 technique and only go 3 technique on sure passing plays.
I'm no coach but that seems like the better way to stop a good running attack. When we played it before no one ran effectively on the Tigers. But, we did have a real experienced and nasty front 4

Do you mean 4 down linemen? 4 Technique is the position on how you align. If I recall correctly the 4 is over the tackle and the 3 is outside the guard. I think you maybe be talking about the down linemen vs technique. If not my apologies.

I was talking 4 down linemen. I just don't know coaching terminology very well. As I said I'm no coach and never have been.
thanks for straightening me up

I think 4 down is definitely an option. BV always says 'we are very multiple' and its true. He mixes it up. But I've felt all along that the 3-4 look was intended to rely on our back 7 while we build depth on the front 4. And I think we have done that. So yeah - against BC - I think we may see more 4 down.
....which may be the exact reason he doesn't do it.... lol

My expectation is that if we see much 3 of the 3-man front, it will be accompanied by blitzes from lots of different places.
When RBs are as big as the ones playing for BC, you want to stop them or slow them down before the weight gets moving.
We will absolutely want to make first contact at or behind the line of scrimmage.

Whatever he goes with just got to make sure we wrap up and tackle on first contact. Also need to cover the dang wheel route!!

Does BC use the running back or the Receiver for their wheel route?

ball. Whether he does that with 3 down linemen and a 8 jammed up behind them or 4 down linemen with 7 jammed in behind them is anyone's guess. Venables knows the stats on the BC QB we will be facing Saturday; Dennis Grosel has thrown 46 total passes while completing only 18 of them in all the games in which he has played. That is a dismal 39% completion rate and begs a defense to dare him to throw the ball.
Armed with the fact that BC is no threat to beat us passing the ball, I expect Coach Venables to play man coverage and gum up the line with as many bodies as he can to keep those two big BC running backs from getting a head of steam past the line of scrimmage. Beating BC's offense is simple - stop the run and they are done. If we tackle well this game will not be close.
