Cornbread. Sweet or unsweet?

I'm a made-from-scratch unsweet man myself. But the kids became Jiffy Mix eaters thanks to school lunchrooms. So it was about 50/50 at our house.
Sometimes when I had more time, I would make a 2-to-1 cornbread/flour mix that had buttermilk, oil, and lots of melted butter cut into the mix, plus a can of creamed corn. You could get fancy and throw in some chunks of bacon. But, it takes about an hour to make that particular recipe vs 15 minutes on the standard.

I love the Jiffy. Also liked what grandma made too but that hasn't been on the menu for 30 years.

Depends but mostly sweet. Tomorrow I'm making a cornbread salad for company. Sounds weird and I've never had it before so hoping it turns out well.

father. He grew up in the Great Depression, and recounted that many times, cornbread was ALL thy had to eat.
I think his exact quote was something along the lines of
"As long as I can afford anything else, I am NEVER eating %$#@! cornbread again."
I HAVE consumed it, and do not find it pleasing, especially in the unsweetened variety. So, I had my own data points.

If i'm making it then it's unsweet but if I'm eating out I can go either way. That said, if I'm making my version I will add a dollop of molasses. That doesn't make it taste sweet at all but helps give it some Umami.

You did not include another cornbread choice....wet or dry. I like most all types just so long as I get chili with it.

Unsweet or Mexican Cornbread with jalepenos. Hard pass on the Yankee (sweet) cornbread.

My folks, Mississippi, always said yellow cornmeal was for slopping the hogs. White, unsweetened was all we ate. Now, the tea would make you into an instant diabetic!
