Hear me out- leave ACC for the BIG10- Clemson, FSU, VT,

Feb 8, 2022, 10:05 AM

Miami ….leave the ACC, ND will have to Join the Conference….make a power play to offset the SEC power play of getting Tex/OU….restructure the TV deal and we get $$$$$. ACC does not care about football and is dying a slow death.

Come on man - not an option

Feb 8, 2022, 10:12 AM

We need good close border rivalry games in the South not games in far away Michigan and Wisconsin.

Yes, Yes to Southern rivalries. Outside of maybe Penn State playing any of those midwest schools doesn't appeal to me at all. Could not care any less about playing east coast Rutgers or Maryland again either.

How about shrinking the ACC back to the old nine without Maryland plus Louisville, Miami and VT.

Didn't the ACC institute a $40 Million dollar buyout after

Feb 8, 2022, 10:19 AM

Maryland bolted for the Big Ten? That ain't chump change.

I do agree that the ACC will never be better than third on the list of Power 5 conferences. And, if the Pac 12 rises under coaches like Lincoln Riley and Chip Kelly, the ACC will slide down to fourth.

In ANY future conference realignment, it makes much more sense for Clemson to join the SEC, rather than any other conference. They would kick the Lamecocks out with both feet and take us in a skinny minute in their place, if they could somehow make that deal.

Re: Didn't the ACC institute a $40 Million dollar buyout after

Feb 8, 2022, 10:29 AM

Understand two things;
1) it's 50 million. But let's not quibble for a mere 10 mill. However # 2 is a bit more complicated.
2)Clemson can not join the SEC. They can ask to join the SEC, but if the SEC does not extend the invitation they aren't going anywhere.
Oh ,let me add a P.S. Those Lamecocks have a bigger television market than Clemson and they certainly won't be kicked out as long as they are the whipping post of the SEC East.

During the college football season the greenville metro area is one of the largest markets that ESPN has. I believe it is usually top 10 nationally. Obviously not all fans live in the Greenville metro but if you are just talking about purely the market in the region of the school then the dirt lot that is Columbia does not even come close.

76er I wonder if the ACC ever got their money. Seems Maryland was or is currently operating in the RED.

Hear me out. Clemson can't go anywhere unless they are invited in. Neither can the other schools you mention.
Hear me out. Notre Dame isn't joining the conference in football. Add to it where does Virginia fit your narrative about the ACC not caring about football. If anything Virginia is more basketball dominate so why should they leave?
Hear me out. If the schools that you think should leave could leave where is the leverage coming from in restructuring any television deal? You would have lost a third of your conference.
Hear me out .You had better go back to the drawing board and figure out a way to make the football part of it relevant because that is where the money and the television revenue is generated.

Re: Hear me out- leave ACC for the BIG10- Clemson, FSU, VT,

He's right you know. We don't need the entire conference to become dominant. The ACC needs to win the ooc games, and especially the head to head sec matchups.

If, a big if, is to get ND. The only way is for there to be another round of additional teams to another conference. As in big 10.

We'll be ok if Miami and FSU come back. UNC continue to rise, then va tech and Pitt have success.

Hear me out .I don't support any of that crap in Columbia, but they are in the SEC and we are not. Add to it the SEC would have one big lawsuit on their hands if they did try to kick them out.

Sometimes good things fall apart so better things can fall together.

It’s a lot higher than $50mil. All ACC schools

Feb 8, 2022, 12:05 PM

signed a GOR which means every dime of our TV $ stays with the ACC for the duration of the contract which runs through ~2035. The cost to us would be int the hundreds of millions of $ - prob $400-$500mil. The earliest we could consider leaving is around 2032 which would give roughly 3 years to transition like UT and OU did. OU and UT aren’t leaving B12 early for the exact same reason. Difference is their conf contract was ending in a few years not anothen 12-13 years from now like ours.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That sounds horrible.

Feb 8, 2022, 11:33 AM

The ACC is full of programs I'd rather see us schedule every year than anything the B1G could offer, plus travel would largely suck if that's all we did.

The ACC squelches our national appeal with these made up, esoteric division names that mean nothing and impossible to follow unless you're a league homer, while simultaneously robbing fans and programs of a greater variety of teams more often and letting rivalries and emotions develop.

There are games fans and the nation seldom see due to our terrible scheduling format:

Clemson v UNC / Miami / Pitt / Va Tech (now it's vs Wake, Syracuse, BC, Louisville EVERY FREAKING YEAR)
FSU v UNC / Pitt / Va Tech / Ga Tech (now vs same as above)
BC v Miami / Pitt (Remember the classic Miami / BC games from the past?)
Louisville v Ga Tech / Va Tech (Va Tech is L'Ville's closest neighbor yet 1x every 6 years now - waste)

It's not the programs so much that weaken our league, it's the wasteful scheduling that waters down our national appeal. Also, when is the last time we recruited stud talent out of VA? Good luck these days playing in the state only once every six years. It's like that all over. Too many programs boxed in to the same lame yearly schedules, leaving juicy alternatives by the wayside, by our own choosing.

Re: Hear me out- leave ACC for the BIG10- Clemson, FSU, VT,

Texas has more money than any other university but still cannot win big. So A&M may have wasted millions of dollars on the 22’ recruiting class. Another negative for A&M is that Jimbo Fisher is their HC. I have read even with BV as the HC OU will still be an average to above average team when they move to the SEC. And all Texas is bringing to the SEC is money.

I believe you are on the right track to counter the SEC move to dominate college football. Clemson, FSU, Pitt, maybe VT, Virginia, and select teams from the Big 10 could form a new conference. One requirement would be that each school must invest a certain dollar amount into Football and Basketball and plans for future investments into the athletes, education, conduct on and off the field and other requirements that would make this new conference stand well above the SEC. Maybe a couple of SEC schools could be plucked like Florida, Ole Miss ( a long shot ) or

Then they must land a large media deal with ESPN and other TV markets. It’s unfortunate that college athletics it’s now All about how much money each school spends on sports.

What is preventing the SEC from....

Feb 8, 2022, 1:31 PM

Adding several more teams, and then the "big players" of the SEC bolting to form their own conference? This way they could effectively "push out" teams such as Vandy, Missouri, maybe UofSC, possibly KY, etc... without really pushing them out. They would just be left behind.

I don't think there is any exit fees from the SEC, correct?

It seems to me to be a way around for the SEC to make a super conference of just who Bama and the others really want...
