There have been obvious mistakes made beginning in camp and continuing into the early recruiting period, but you seem to enjoy these pitfalls, as if you were reacting from a viewpoint based in antagonism and spite.

Accusing Venables and Bates of stabbing Dabo in the back is pretty ridiculous, don’t you think?
Thus the reason I asked if this was a joke.

I have sat by the way side and read tigernet boards for 10 years. I am a Clemson man, love all things Clemson. Graduated from Clemson and damun proud of it. Judge Keller you have a right to your so called devils advocate views, but it’s getting old. I have seen your basketball bias in full swing, I made a promise to myself to not get caught up in the message board madness. Simple as this, discussed or not between BV or Dabo, Todd leaving is wrong. Knowing Dabo and the way he conducts business, I do not think he saw this coming, I more than appreciate BV and his contributions to our Clemson! The same Clemson that gives you joy on the BBall court or football field, right is right and wrong is wrong. Dabo was caught off guard with this one, but unlike Brownell he will adjust and overcome. My first post, I don’t even understand the point system of this board, don’t care honestly, go tigers and thank god for DABO SWINNEY!!!

It seems like you are projecting your frustration over another hit to our program

by unfairly criticizing Coach Bates.
He has been a key part of our defense and our recruiting efforts during our recent stretch of playoffs and national championships. He and Dabo clearly have a mutual respect for one another.
It’s assuming a lot to say that Dabo didn’t know and that Bates is somehow wronging Dabo. Were you present in meetings they had? If not, you don’t know what was said or what the two agreed to.
Regardless, unless Bates is contractually prohibited from taking a job at Oklahoma, and Venables is contractually bound not hiring a coach from Clemson, there is nothing wrong with this. Elliott hired some Clemson coaches, so why can’t Venables?
Being mad at Bates is short-sighted IMO. He deserves to further his career just like anyone else. Like Conn and Goodwin, Bates paid his dues at Clemson. Unlike them, he wasn’t rewarded with a co-DC promotion. He wasn’t likely to see any promotions at Clemson anytime soon, but likely saw potential for one at Oklahoma so he took it. It makes perfect sense, since he and Venables have worked closely together for years.
This is the tough side of sports, but it’s the reality. I suggest you show these guys some grace and give them the benefit of the doubt.

Man do you know what college football is about??? You’re like Dabo it doesn’t matter if you’re winning you’re happy & if you’re gonna be I. Championships you have to have the best of coach’s & this hiring within has me stunned. So Clemsonwill be 20 19 15 in the coming years because Dabo will not expand his coaching staff ability & he will not make the national championship in5-6 years!

you left out the part about taking valuable resources away with you from your former bosses, like recruits and Bates. it's not the leaving for a better opportunity that's back stabbing, it's the poaching, especially after supposedly saying he wouldn't.

Except some key things changed after Venables left.

Namely, Dabo promoting two other coaches on staff to co-DC, bypassing Bates in the process.
That changes things. I'm sure Bates was hoping to be promoted to co-DC.
Dabo had his chance to keep Bates if he really wanted to, and he didn't.
That opens up opportunities for Bates to go elsewhere.
Bates didn't sign a lifetime contract, and Venables didn't sign a lifetime non-compete.
This isn't personal, it's just business.

to make key decisions in an attempt to win at a high level.
How dare they hire a coach from the previous staff they worked closely with for years!
Don’t you think Brent probably spoke with Dabo about hiring Bates? Because I’m confident a conversation took place. And regardless, Brent was well within his rights to pursue Bates unless someone signed a non-compete or has it in their contract that they are prohibited from talking to certain coaches or leaving for specific schools.

And I didn’t make anything up. I am stating what I think probably happened based on what I’ve read and how these situations usually work.
I never stated that things happened exactly the way I said, 100% guaranteed, with the evidence to prove it. In case you didn’t know, most of what is posted on Internet forums are either opinions, predictions, or suppositions. Not fact. That includes your posts.
I questioned the OP to see if he was joking, because otherwise it’s ludicrous to call Venables or Bates backstabbers.
I also defended them for doing things ethically and legally.
I defended Bates by noting that he likely wanted to stay at Clemson and gave Dabo a chance to promote him.
I also defended Dabo by acknowledging that he made the decision that was best for the program, and was likely very fair with everyone involved. Because that’s how Dabo does things.
You really should bury whatever personal grudge you evidently have for me and evaluate what I say based on its own merit without assuming so much.

not Bates. Bates apparently has the aptitude to be a co-defensive coordinator under Venables. He didn't get a promotion here while others did. That can be cause to leave, especially if it's deemed a promotion (and likely more money).

Dabo seems to have a good pulse on his staff. I’m sure lots of conversations took place and Dabo knew that Bates leaving was a real possibility since he didn’t promote him to co-DC.
It’s the nature of the business, and a similar situation is the reason we were able to get Venables from Oklahoma. If Venables hadn’t been “demoted” from sole DC to co-DC by Stoops, he probably would’ve stayed there and ultimately been named HC after Stoops left.

One recruit, singular, has gone with BV. If you want to think that BV is negative recruiting against Clemson and actively trying to flip Clemson recruits, that’s your prerogative and you’re welcome to have those thoughts. I disagree and actually believe the opposite.

In fact, after taking the Oklahoma job he contacted Clemson commits and encouraged them to remain with Clemson. He didn’t have to do that, but it speaks to his high character.
Yet amazingly, the OP calls him a backstabber. Unbelievable.

Not sure how you come to that. Lateral move is taking the same job at the same level of prestige. The prestige levels are similar, but Bates was a position Coach here while at OU he is a DC. That is not a lateral move. And the Assistant HC thing is usually a title used in order to justify a pay bump, but nowhere near the level of a Coordinator.

eventually took a promotion and left for greener pastures. Also had a few that made me really value that early retirement package that I jumped on with both feet when the timing was right.
When you get right down to it, Most Type "A" personalities are going to keep running that Hamster maze until they break out at the highest levels.
The biggest difference between Sports management jobs and regular business management jobs is this:
People who make the promotions in Sports management readily admit they screwed up those promotions when things do not work out, and fire, and try again.
In most regular big businesses, the people making those promotions do NOT EVER want to admit a mistake, and will keep those Idjits they promoted around for years instead. It is called "The Peter Principle", and you best believe it is a real thing.

I don't understand why yall can't understand that coaching is these guys jobs....they want promotions to the best opportunities available.....BV was offered boat loads of money to be the HC of the program with the most wins in cfb since 2000.....why the #### wouldn't he take it?
Bates wanted a opportunity to be a DC...that wasn't happening at Clemson, Goodwin is the guy for years to come....Brent offered him an opportunity to be co/dc and that's what he wanted so he moved on
These guys didn't back stab anyone....
In July 2006 had someone of offered dabo a HC job to leave his position at Clemson he would of broke his #### neck heading to the first plane outta Pickens County.
It's a job

whole lot of other business professionals. Leaving for a promotion is an established fact in the business professional world.
I can't blame Brent Venables for wanting as much of a "comfort zone" in his first Head Coaching staff as he could get.
That being said, whether there was any kind of gentlemen's agreement between he and Dabo will never be made public.
What it more likely was, is Dabo knew he couldn't keep everyone that Brent wanted. So, he promoted those he figured had the most upside, as much as he could. In the case of Todd Bates, BV was still able to make him a better offer.
Assistants really value that "Coordinator" title, because, beyond that, the next logical step is a Head Coaching gig. Dabo tried to accommodate as many with that title as he could, but in the end, it was a musical chairs deal with one guy winding up without a chair here, and one available at Oklahoma.
