Brings back memories. Almost every Thursday night during football season there was a pep rally at the amphitheater and coach Howard would get up and tell a few stories. He retired the year I graduated so he was coach the whole time I was at Clemson.

I loved Coach Howard...talked with him many times in his office before home games. He was always there and made you feel special...I cried when he passed away...there'll never be another like him.

I never will forget Coach Howard interviewing the Bear back in the 70's. Heard it on the way to the NC State game. The previous summer Bear had broken his leg. Frank says, "Bear, we all know the real story is you were out on Lake Pontchetrain sp? walking on water and got run over by a motor boat". Priceless

It was September 1970 and I was on leave from the Army before shipping off to Vietnam. I thought it would be a great idea to catch one more Tiger football game before my year away. This was an ancient time long before the advent of either the Internet or FedEx, so to get my tickets in a timely fashion, a trip to Clemson was in order. After visiting some friends, who prudently continued their schooling and deferment in graduate school, I zipped over to the Athletic Department which was housed in Fike Field House. Game tickets could be bought in the lobby of Fike, but when I got there, no one else was around. As I waited and looked into the ticket window, out of a side door bounded a rather large fellow full of energy and full of himself. It was the Clemson Athletic Director, former Coach, and all around Legend, Frank Howard. Since there was no one else around, just little old me, I was the only human available for him to share his excitement. He said, "Hey boy, come over here, I want to tell you what I have just done." I dutifully said, "Yes Coach Howard." He said, "I just got off the phone with Notre Dame and signed them to a 'home and away deal' for '77 and '79." For a 23 year old off to Vietnam that seemed like an eternity away, but now,in retrospect, playing them toe-to-toe in '77 and beating them in their house in '79 is one of the keys leading to the Tiger's success and national relevance of the 1980's.
