Positioning…pandering…fear-mongering…poh-tay-toe…poh-tah-toe.

With that said, both sides do it…and while I fully expect dems to try to consolidate power in Washington, I get confused when I see small government conservatives try to do the same.

There should be zero support for a bill like this at any level of government, but especially at the federal level. I disagree with both the need for and the intent of similar bills, but at least the ones passed at the state level (or lower) are impactful to fewer people and there are still jurisdictions where one might find like-minded folks, on whichever side you happen to fall.

Parents already have rights at the local/school level…they have democratically elected school boards…and any parent can review the material their child is learning at school. There are open houses, parent-teacher conferences…any number of ways for parents to interact and learn more about what their child is learning. If they don’t want their child exposed to certain topics, I’m pretty sure every district has a mechanism to handle that as well. Hell, way back in the stone-ages when I was in HS, I had a friend whose parents didn’t want her to watch ‘Inherit the Wind’ in class…so she had study hall and an alternate lesson for a few days.

But these bills aren’t really about parental involvement anyway…they are just a mechanism to identify isolated cases the religious right can highlight to further denigrate public schools and drum up support for legislation to allow public monies to be used to support Christian schools, where they can practice their own brand of indoctrination.

Those of us in the middle of this fight know we will eventually end up under authoritarian rule…we just aren’t sure which brand yet…but I’d say the right has a leg up right now.

Close, but off

You’re correct in the thought that this shouldn’t be necessary, but it unfortunately is. This is clearing up the gray area that the teachers union is trying to exploit.

OR

You guys can stop fighting school choice.

You have to pick a side here.

That’s kind of my point though. Are you seeing countless examples because issues are so prevalent that you can’t help but notice…or are these truly isolated cases that are just being sensationalized. I’m not saying those issues identified aren’t worthy of scrutiny, but if you look long and hard enough at any population, you will eventually find something to support your cause/agenda.

With that said, I think parents should absolutely be involved and have a say in what their kids are learning. However, just as I don’t think we should teach down to the lowest common denominator in public schools, we also shouldn’t base curriculum on the objections of the most conservative (or progressive) parental groups either. There’s a fairly significant number of Americans that think we shouldn’t teach evolution in school, or that creationism should be given equal time. I think that’s ludicrous. However, I also agree with you that the schools in some areas schools/teachers have become too involved in the lives/welfare of their students. This is hard to avoid on a personal level. I think it does come from a place of caring, even if it has been taken to an extreme by some on the left in support of their own misplaced agendas.

Bottom line…it’s simply unnecessary legislation.

Not saying we don’t have issues…my wife is special needs/resource…so I hear the stories. But which of these issues will this particular legislation resolve? None…the folks voting for the legislation (at least those on the far right) don’t want to make public education better, they want to pave the way for its destruction.

100% on your comment. Congressional Republicans aren't even all that sincere about it - just ginning up the base. They had to remove "eliminate the Department of Education" and "allow vouchers to be used for private schools" to even get a majority of their own... but that those things were even proposed tells you what some of them think of public education.

If it passes, does it mean we get to sell the “extra” ones to factories again like they do in China?

Give free rein to the 95% of parent who are blathering idiots? Doesn’t sound like a good idea.

“Give rein” to the parents. The rein is not the governments to give. I sure hope we have not gotten to the point that a majority of people think that right belongs to the government.

Unfortunately, you might be one of those blathering idiots.

The government has the responsibility in this country to protect children from bad parents, scout leaders, priests, and creepy neighbors. Most parents, without that guidance and fear of punishment, could not be trusted to always act correctly. Even with good intentions. Most people are idiots.

Mar 25, 2023, 8:02 PM

Exactly. I’m not responding to that clown. Sure, the govt should protect kids who are obviously being harmed by parents. But kids do not belong to the govt. Maybe the govt thinks the parent is not very intelligent. Is that a reason to take over? Absolutely not. Maybe the govt doesn’t like the parents religion? If this govt thinks I’m any way kids are its responsibility to raise them it’s past time to rein in the govt.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Who'd ever thought that House of Reps would need to pass a

Mar 25, 2023, 11:57 PM

Actually, you did respond to me. Thus my assumption you must be one of those blathering idiots, or just some fool who sympathizes with them. You still don’t understand the point. The government doesn’t own the kids. But the parents don’t either. The parents are responsible for the kids. The government needs to be a backstop because most of the parents are idiots.

If you want to argue that children are property of their parents, I’ll sign off as the sad clown who knows there’s one more idiot out there. So many idiots. So many fools.

Ok fine. Parents do not “own” their kids. But parents do own the responsibility of them.

It’s obvious you don’t have children and you’re probably a child yourself if you believe 95% of parents are blathering idiots.

I’d examine your theories very closely. When your concision is “the government knows best”, you’re heading down a scary path.
