Men's tennis has their first bigtime match of the year at home vs $16 Michigan State on Sunday at noon.

The Tigers are 4-0 so far with wins at Memphis and at FAU. The Memphis win being a great one, as Memphis has since beaten UNC.

- Michigan State is 4-1 win a win over #7 Kentucky and only loss to #2 TCU. The Spartans may be ranked #16 but most in college tennis agree they are way better than that ranking. Once the computer rankings start they will likely be a top 10 team this season.

Michigan State tennis is a very interesting program because they were bottom of the Big Ten for years, the very worst program in that league for like the whole 2000s and 2010s because of scholarship limit rules on only allowing tennis scholies for in-state Michigan players. And with Michigan not being the biggest tennis state and Michigan taking the top ones, they were hamstrung. But two years ago they hired a new coach and with NIL opportunities, things have changed and they've made an extremely rapid change as a program in 2 years.

Projected MSU lineup for Sunday

1. #8 Ozan Baris, Jr. Okemos, MI
2. #27 Aristelos Thanos, So. Athens, Greece
3. #83 Max Sheldon, Sr. Arlington Heights, IL
4. #40 Matthew Forbes, Fr. Raleigh, NC
5. Vuk Radjenovic, Fr. Belgrade, Serbia
6. Taym Alazmeh, So. Damascus, Syria.
Alt. Danial Rakhmatullayev, Fr. Aktau, Kazakhstan

- The Spartans are led by one of the best players from the state of Michigan in a while. Baris was ranked #1 in the nation in the fall and is now ranked #8. Freshman Matthew Forbes won a big US national junior tournament last year. He was committed to UNC forever but was flipped to MSU at the last moment.

- MSU plays #14 Tennessee today, so they are making it into a southern road trip. They seem to be more focused on that match and could be underestimating Clemson on Sunday. My hope is that they blitz Tennessee today and take us lightly on Sunday and we come to surprise them by giving them a tough match.

We will likely go with:

1. #69 Noa Vukadin, So. Zagreb, Croatia
2. Viktor Markov, Fr. Sofia, Bulgaria
3. #92 Wissam Abderrahman, So. Paris, France/Tunisia
4. Romain Gales, Jr. Quimper, France (VCU transfer)
5. Marko Mesarovic, So. Austin, TX
6. #96 Max Smith, Sr. Daniel Island, SC
Alt. Edoardo Ligniere, Fr. Veneto, Italy

We may possibly switch 2 and 3, with Markov taking a straight sets loss at FAU last match. I expect Ligniere to remain out of the lineup for now with Smith and Mesarovic winning still.

Think our coaches might shuffle the lineups some?

Maybe get some of our higher rated guys against their lower rated guys, hope to steal a win especially if they don't have head in the game after the Tennessee contest

Well there are rules against doing that too much

To prevent that very thing. You can only move a player 1 spit up or down between 1 match. So you can’t move a guy from 1 down to 4 just after 1 match. It would have to be a few matches of gradually moving him down.

And even so the other team can challenge a lineup if they think it’s an egregious stack. Like putting a player with a way worse record ahead of someone with a much better record.

Some teams shuffle lineup more than others if they are more evenly spread teams.

I think the only change we may make is flipping 2 and 3. MSU may also move Forbes up to #3.

but not impossible. Regardless it will be good to see how we stack up vs a very good team.

Also hoping for a decent crowd to attend. We also got the Gamecocks at home on Friday the 7th, so an important week for the team.

I'll take another 4-3 win like last weekend when the Tigers did it to Florida Atlantic in Boca Raton,Florida

The Spartans played without their #2 Thanos in the lineup. If he is out on Sunday that’ll give Clemson a better shot because they are a little bit susceptible at the bottom of the lineup
