Clemson runner knocked off track by Virginia Tech photographer

Yes, you read that title correctly. I watched it happen live in complete shock; I wish I was joking. That was section 4 of the men's 800 meter prelims at the ACC indoor championship meet late this afternoon. The Clemson runner was sophomore Blaik Slavinski. Fortunately, track rules allow for athletes to be awarded a spot in the final if the officials deem that an athlete was fouled or unfairly impeded during prelims. After review, the officials gave Slavinski (and the 2 other runners impacted) all spots in the final. I thought that was the correct call, so props to them and thank goodness for that. I was fixing to blow a fuse if Blaik didn't get awarded a spot. But man, that absolutely cannot happen, and at the ACC championship meet no less. I'm just glad nobody got injured and that it didn't cost anybody (especially Blaik) a spot in the finals. You can see some crazy stuff happen at indoors, but that one wasn't on my bingo card for today...

What's funny is that in heat 1 of that same event, Clemson's top 800m runner Brain Kweyei had a huge lead almost the whole way but then got caught right at the line by a Miami guy. There's only 1 auto-qualifier per heat in that event, so we had to nervously wait to see if he could qualify by time. Thankfully, he ended up getting the last time qualifier spot, so he will also be in the final. So the Tigers got both of their best 800m runners into the final, which is great. But they did it in about the most stressful and unexpected way imaginable. Probably not quite how Coach Elliott drew it up lol. I would've paid to see a shot of his reaction to the collision.
