Quick question

I was born in GVL, Sc in ‘93 and graduated from Clemson in ‘17. Papa came to clemson on the GI bill in the late 40s and I was raised right.
For half of my life we were bad to mediocre and then Dabo really turned things around in the 10s.
We’re now a preeminent brand in college football.
Clemson had some strong teams in the 80s and we won a natty!
Gore (apparently) was a good player back in his day.
My question: we’ve been mediocre for 80% of our programs history.
How did some of yall old heads keep the faith for whippersnappers like me?

By beating the coots regularly and soundly. By owning them. Regardless of whether we were mediocre or nationally relevant in the decades of yore, we've always owned their sorry azzes.

We have had a number of good teams in every decade except maybe the 60s and those were my favorite teams. Good coaching and great athletes from time to time . I think for us natives, it has always been loyalty. To me, it all goes back to the outbreak of war in the 40s. I wasn’t born until the 50s but I’ve always respected and admired the way all of those young men left school and entered the services. Hope that explains one aspect of Clemson loyalty.

You need to learn history. We were great in the 80's and won a National Championship then. We won many ACC conference championships before Dabo. We never got the respect in the 40's and 50's because of size and location.

Because we were commonly bowl eligible and pretty successful especially when it was an achievement to make bowl status. Now you have to be bad not to make a bowl luke the coots last year. But there was a time when there was pure excitement in making a bowl because there wasnt 42 of them per season. Going to the Gator bowl was great for players to get additional coaching, get a lot of cool swag, be on national TV and not Raycom. When players were loyal to schools and knew what commitment was versus being rented for a season.

I remember those days. Frank Howard just about ran Buddy Gore to death. Maybe every other play. If you stopped Gore, you beat Clemson.

Most of us understand you can’t win it all every year. We’ve been good enough most years to keep the hope alive that we could be great again. And we did just that under Dabo’s leadership.
It’s really like most things in life. Good sometimes needs to be good enough. Great is many times a hope or a dream.

I started there in the fall of 1960 and there were no female dorms. When the first one opened in the fall of 1963 we thought we had died and gone to heaven. With around 4500 students there wasn't anyone you didn't know by sight. It was kind of Clemson versus the rest of the state, and we knew we were the best.

and 5 bowls in the 50s when playing in bowls was a big deal. Then came the 800 rule and it was not until 1977 that we played in another bowl. The rest everyone remembers. We were a small school for a long time but we were loyal and remembered the seeds planted before us. We knew we could be good as anyone and it helped owning SC. I was a freshman in 67 and we played some great games that year. We never quit believing.

That ‘67 team was very good. Problem was they played the toughest schedule in the country.

Kinda like asking why you keep loving your child when they don’t excel, or when your parents don’t excel, or your spouse. I’ve been doing this for 50+ years and there have been many very discouraging years, but then along comes “ 7-4 in 74” and we’re right back to thinking we can win it all. Hang in there

Well when you look at total wins for all NCAA football teams whether they are D1 or D3, not only did Dabo get the ACC record Saturday at FSU, the win was Clemson's 802nd total win passing Auburn for 18th all time ranking. Next up is LSU.
At their current pace, UofSC may get to 802 wins by about 2050 while the Tiger's add another 250+.
Clemson has always be pretty darn good.
