Comparing LSU & Clemson
Dec 26, 2012, 11:05 AM
|
|
I already posted 10 reasons why I think LSU will win and position comparisons for the game. I decided that this morning I will compare the schools and programs of LSU and Clemson.
Stadium - LSU and Clemson both call their stadium Death Valley. LSU's stadium is highly regarded as one of the best home field advantages in all of sports. Clemson has a nice stadium that gets a little national pub. I have never seen one stadium ranking in college football that has the Death Valley in Clemson ahead of the Death Valley in Baton Rouge. Winner - LSU Easily
Campus - Both campuses are very atheistic with their trees and stylistic buildings. Both campuses do a great job of keeping up with the times while also keeping the integrity and architecture of the original campus. Winner - Push
Females - Clemson is not known for having the best looking females. Like any college campus, they have some good looking women, but not near the quantity of LSU. LSU is not Ole Miss, but there are still a ton of gorgeous girls all over campus. Winner - LSU Easily
Academics - Both schools are decent schools as far as academics. Neither school is Harvard and neither school is a junior college. If you look at Forbes most recent list, LSU is ranked at 299 in the country, and Clemson is ranked at 218. This has fluctuated year to year with both schools being ahead in certain years. Due to the most recent list, I will give Clemson the advantage. Winner - Clemson slightly
Conference - I really don't even have to compare this one. SEC >>>>>>>>>ACC. Winner - LSU easily
Program Revenue and Profit - LSU was listed as the #4 most valuable program in all of college football. Clemson didn't crack the top 20. Winner - LSU easily
Non Football Sports - Football is the top dog in college athletics, but what about the non football sports. Clemson isn't known for basketball. They have made the tournament some recently, but don't have much to show for it. The baseball team has some recent cws appearances, but no wins. None of the other sports have done a whole lot, except the golf teams national championship in 2003. LSU has 6 baseball national championships since 1990. The basketball team has 4 final 4 appearances to Clemson's 0. Golf team has 4 national championships, and track and field has 31 national championships. Winner - LSU by a landslide
Fans - LSU has a fanbase all over the country. LSU is the main school in Louisiana and also has strong alumni bases in Houston, Atlanta, Dallas and many other major cities. Clemson has nice fans, but not too the level of LSU. Winner - LSU
Traditions - Clemson has the rock that they touch. LSU has white jerseys at home, Mike the Tiger, H Style goal posts, the 4 corner salute in pregame and many more. Winner - LSU
Football History - Clemson has 1 national championship and 18 conference titles. LSU has 3 naitonal championships and 14 conference titles (11 SEC). Clemson has a 16-18 record in bowl games. LSU has a 23-20-1 record in bowl games. LSU has finished ranked in the top 10 22 times. Clemson has finished ranked in the top 10 6 times. Winner - LSU easily

You say that, and the supposed LSU clown suggests that Bleacher report isn't "credible", but this isn't a black and white issue. It's clearly a matter of opinion.

Let me follow up by saying....
Stadium - Will give LSU the slight edge based on the recent advantage and slightly larger size.
Campus- Have not been to LSU so cannot make a unbiased comparison.
Females - You obviously have not been to Clemson is you think it is not known for its women. I will give LSU credit so I would have to say push.
Academics - Not really close Clemson wins.
Conference - Based on the new standards of conference strength this one goes to LSU.
Program Revenue and Profit - LSU
Non Football Sports - LSU athletic programs do surpass Clemson but it is of note we are talking about a 10k student difference in enrollment.
Fans - LSU has more fans based on enrollment but I would put Clemson fans up against anyone for true passion.
Traditions - None of those LSU traditions are nationally known. Clemson has lots of traditions that I could put up against that list, but the ones that truly matter are nationally known and that is what matters. Clemson Easily.
Football History - LSU does have a history of winning but is not as far ahead of Clemson as some might think.

own" Nobody knows about Mike the Tiger? Nobody knows about the white jerseys? Nobody knows about the pregame 4 corner salute? Nobody knows about the best tailgating in the country?
Give me a break.
"Academics - Not really close Clemson wins."
It was pretty close on the few years of the Forbes list I reviewed with LSU ahead in some years. LSU was also ahead in AWRU and a couple others.

Congrats you have a mascot, wear white at home sometimes not always, do a 4 corner salute that no one knows about and claim to be better at something that every team in America does.

so i may be considered a "casual" college football fan, but i have NEVER heard of the name of that Tiger.
but to name him "Mike the Tiger" is comical !!!!
i mean come on. just go ahead and name him "Tony" !!!
hahahahahahahaha
i would hope our tiger's name was some exotic burmese name or something.
"Mike the Tiger" ...that is hilarious.
i actually like "Uga" better than Mike.

It is very nice. On Gamedays, he gets in his travel cage, rides around campus and around the stadium before the game. He then goes back to his habitat.

I don't get the point, though. I'll never convince you that Clemson traditions are better and I know #### well you won't convince me that lsu is better.
I've been a Clemson fan for almost 40 years and I couldn't care less about lsu or it's traditions. All I care about is a W on New Years Eve.
BTW, I think the 4 corner thing is kinda' lame but I can see why y'all like it. USCe thinks their chicken-in-a-box pregame is cool too...
That is all.

I'm sure you are very proud of your band but that was neither spectacular nor special. Many schools have very good bands and many of them do some kind of special formation at some special time. While it may be unique it is not earth shattering. I do not fear LSU any more now than I did before watching that video, sorry.

Here you go bayou troller:
Traditions:
Clemson's run down the hill comes in at #4 out of the top 100.
LSU has two lame rankings in this list:
#35 - Mike the Tiger (So nice to keep him in a small cage during game day. I'm sure he feels real comfy there. At least you do have a decent habitat for him on non-gamedays)
#42 - Night games at LSU. Real special! Night games are great everywhere.

Campus: Clemson is located right next to a lake that can be seen from the stadium. It is also located a short distance from the The Appalachian Mountains in SC, GA, and NC. This one isn't even close. I've never heard anything about the wonderful geographic beauty of Louisiana.
Females: That's ridiculous. I know Clemson has some unbelievable southern beauties and I'm sure LSU does too. Again, you need to rethink your definition of easily.
Academics: We win consistently here.
Conference: The edge obviously goes to the SEC, but the only reason I would want to be in that conference is because of the ridiculous advantage in money its members get over the ACC. Money has ruined college athletics. As far as overall national titles LSU tops all teams in the ACC and SEC with 45. UGA has 26. UNC and MD are on the list too with 39 and 25 respectively. I couldn't find data on the rest, but I'm sure the SEC has more overall, but not by a landslide outside of football.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_NCAA_Division_I_schools_with_the_most_national_championships
Profit/Revenue: Clemson would easily be in the top 20 if we were in the $EC.
National Championships: Throw in two national championships in soccer for Clemson.
Fans: LSU fans are known as some of the meanest in the country (corn dogs). I believe many polls have us listed as one of the top tailgate spots in college football.
Football History: Pound for pound, considering our history as a smaller school, I'd say it's a draw.
Bottom line, do more research before spatting out a bunch of BS and embarrassing yourself and your fan base dude.

I am not talking about the aesthetics of the states, just the campuses. I have been to both. They are both very nice.
The academics is closer than you think.
You aren't in the sec.
Who cares if you are a small school? I am comparing the history of the 2 programs. Who cares if Texas is big and Tulane is smaller? They are competing for the same thing.

You can see the lake and the mountains from the campus! Have you really been there?
I think you need to do a little more research on the academics thing. Has LSU ever won public university of the year. We did. Some time in the last decade we tied Cornell for that honor.
Yes we aren't in the SEC. SEC schools get an average of around 20 million more a year from their conference than ACC schools. If we were just talking athletic fundraising Clemson would be close to LSU.
It does matter that we are historically a smaller school. Many of the games we played during our first 60 years of football had to be played away. Obviously it is much harder to win on the road thus our overall record would be much better were this the case. If you look at our record from 1970 forward it would be close to yours.
Oh. And just to throw in one more historic feather in our cap, The John Heisman coached here. Ever heard of him?
If you think Clemson fans are scared of LSU fans why don't you pick one your size and start some $hit.
You've really fired me up for the game bayoubiatch. Thanks, I'm going to yell much louder because of you.

What!? An LSU fan picking LSU in essentially all categories?
Dec 26, 2012, 12:32 PM
|

What a surprise, I thought for sure you would have favored Clemson. Here's a more accurate list:
Stadium...The hill, Howards rock, most exciting 25 seconds in college football? Winner - Clemson easily
Campus...Clemson's landscaping, rolling hills, Hartwell lake, and the Blueridge as a backdrop? Winner - Clemson easily
Females...There are plenty of hot girls at Clemson, but I will never discredit a hot girl when I see one, regardless of alma mater...you must provide pics to dispute this lol. Winner - PUSH
Academics...LOL, Winner - Clemson easily
Conference...Don't give two ##### how my conference members play. There are no co-champions in the ACC, there must be in the SEC as much as I here teams brag on each other. Winner - MAC
Traditions...Clemson's traditions make LSU's look like a bad 80's pop song. Winner - Clemson easily
Fans...Clemson's campus was recently voted one of the best to tailgate, mainly b/c of the friendly nature of our fans...LSU's fans are @ssholes. Winner - Clemson easily
There, I corrected some of your list. Get it right next time...

Memorial Stadium, a monument to those who died serving our country, was nicknamed "Death Valley" by an opposing coach in 1948 whereas Tiger Stadium was called "Deaf Valley" by a sportswriter who was making a word-play off of Clemson's nickname in the 1980's. Both stadium have the same winning percentage, but, since you've been mispronouncing your own nickname for 30 years I believe the point goes to Clemson, easily.

Well, let's see here....
Dec 26, 2012, 5:32 PM
|
|
So, LSU has it all over L'il old Clemson, eh?
Well, let's just take a look.... Where would you rather watch a game: Here...
Or here?
Ever wonder why LSU doesn't want you to see its stadium in daylight?
1. Stadium: Who has taken a look at how the two stand side-by-side? I've certainly heard broadcasters gush over your swamp-bound concrete septic tank saying "There's nothing like Saturday night in Baton Rouge!" Well, there's nothing like Saturday night in the drunk tank in Shreveport, either. Don't ask me how I know. Just trust me. There's a reason LSU tries to only schedule night games ... and it isn't just the evening ambiance. Granted, y'all have about 10,000 more seats in the bowl, but just own up and admit your folks didn't have the originality to name your place Death Valley until a good 20 years after Clemson did and we'll all be fine.
Natural beauty and a lack of mosquitoes makes the original Death Valley a far better place to spend a Saturday.
2. Campus: Being this close to the Almighty, it would be tough for Clemson to be the least bit atheistic....but I get your drift. Never been to LSU's campus, but it appears to be traditional, large ... and flat. Like it was built on a 12-square mile pancake flat. Clemson's campus is one of the most beautiful in the country. Student Review gave it an A+, to an overall grade of B+. Who am I to argue?
3. Women: I dunno...there seems to be something about LSU girls that appeals to y'all, but I just don't see it.
Just teasing, of course. Once you get past the aroma of corn dogs and cheap bourbon, there are just as many good-looking gals at LSU as you can find at Clemson. Note, that's just as many. Not more. I'll give you a push on this, but you'd be a fool to try and claim the high ground.
4. Academics: You were wise beyond your school of choice not to make this a point of contention.
5. Conference: And I am equally wise not to contend this.
Don't YOU want to go to LSU when you grow up?
6. Revenue: Obviously this is an offshoot of Point 5. I will note that the average attendance for a day game at Clemson is likely at least equal to that of an LSU game. And we don't even get that residual profits from "Duck Dynasty."
I bet those Clemson wimps can't do THIS!
6. Non football: I give...we'll NEVER have a gator-snagging team as good as LSU's. We probably won't quite match up in Noodling, either. But if you want to play the SEC card in football, we'll play it in basketball ... and baseball ... and lacrosse. Well, OK, we don't have a lacrosse team, but our women's rowing team would kick Billy the Exterminator's rear end! Depending how far back you wish to go, our soccer program will whip your's (since you don't have a soccer team). Really? You want to talk Olympic sports and you DON'T even play soccer? Debate's over. Next point...
7. Fans: You surrendered this point in your last sentence "Clemson has nice fans but..."
Here's a fair question: If I take fans from schools who have played both Tigers and ask them, which fan base will they say is better? Aside from UCS fans, who share that recessive gene with y'all. Let's ask Texas A&M folks. Hmmm, it says on Texags.com that y'all are the "Texas Tech of the SEC." High praise indeed.
Stadium Journey.com gives Clemson's fans a 5-of-5. LSU gets a 5 as well, but for different reasons. They give y'all points for intimidation, which I assume means things like your SEC brethren do ... peeing from the stadium on visitors, keying cars, drunkenly assaulting children and old ladies. If that's what you assume makes you superior fans, then we have no common point of reference to discuss. In fact, I see GQ magazine named your fan base one of the worst in the nation, based on behavior.
Thanks for playing.
9: Traditions: At Clemson, they welcome fans on the field after games to sing the alma mater. At LSU, they have security guards ring the field so drunk fans won't cause mayhem. Right there tells you all that is important in a school's athletic tradition. We revere athletics as part of the Clemson experience. Y'all denigrate is as part of an alcoholic bacchanal. We share tailgates with opposing fans,, y'all share drinks over the heads of visitors.
Truly memorable traditions indeed. Even 8-Ball the Tiger has more appeal than Mike.
10. History: Technically, we have 20 titles (21 if you'd like to give us that 2009 title that GTech got by cheating) but it's all just numbers. I'll give you the point, but only because you beat us in the 1959 Sugar Bowl. Had Mickey Mangham not slapped the Clemson defender in the face with a corn dog in the third quarter and run for a TD, we would be tied in total number of national titles.
All in all, I see it as a clean win for Clemson. But then I would.
I just wouldn't go on an opponent's message board and try to prove it. But again, that's the difference between LSU and the Clemson Family.
And I d@mned proud to be on this side of the ffence.

fall so flat. That was uninteresting, untrue and unparalleled as far as failure goes.
You used just about every LA stereotype in the book and were far from clever in doing so.
Pretty pathetic and lame attempt at humor.

Son, I don't post to "be funny" ....

Your post was both insulting and condescending, attempting to rile the Sons of Clemson with SEC sputum.
You come and spit on the floor of our home, then expect us admire your marksmanship? Fie on you and those who think that they have somehow earned a right to belittle Clemson and the proud young men who strive to represent our school and way of life! I have no need to attempt to use humor to point out the thinly veiled insults you hurl, because they are so plaintively and patented transparent.
Your school has absolutely nothing on Clemson, except for population and self-importance. On those, we will never match you.
And we shall be forever thankful for the difference.

It took a smug, self-important sycophant of SEC proportions to remind me how blessed we are ...and how we must never allowed our home to slide into the fetid slime that surrounds us.

Rev dodd posts this long attempt at being funny and fails. I call him out on it, and then he claims he wasn't trying to be funny. Nothing for me to "top."

Come up with something original.
I guess #1 is original, but the Clemson fans on here have been pretty good at being arrogant dooooochebags.
Nice Katrina joke. Stay classy Clemson fan. Nice to make fun of something where people lost their homes and some their lives too. I bet you tell crazy lunatic mass murderer jokes to Virginia Tech fans.
Also, LSU is not a state. It is a University in Baton Rouge, which is in Louisiana.
I can guarantee there are zero pregnant 15 year olds that attend LSU.
Another lame attempt at trying to be funny.

Listen, I don't care for lsu and it's because of their fans.

What I have seen of lsu fans is...well, it's been really bad. You may not be like the ones I have encountered but it doesn't really matter. lsu has a bad reputation for a reason.
Most of what you are seeing on this site is Clemson fans reacting to the way we've been treated by your fanbase, not you personally. You are reaping what others have sown.
If you want to talk football, fine. Judging from the posts of yours that I have read, you don't. I wouldn't be surprised if you are not a #### fan playin as an lsu fan.
With that said, most of us don't have any real problems with LA or lsu. I for one spent 3 weeks of unpaid vacation helping (for free) to rebuild after Katrina. We were treated pretty badly while there, surprisingly. Seems that even when you try to do something nice for people, they will still #### on you. I'm not saying that as a slight to lsu, since it's not in NO, it's just a fact.
Have a good day. I won't respond to any more of your posts unless they are about the game. I hope my Tigers beat the #### out of your tigers.
On a related note: You can believe me when I say that if any of your fans gets in my face in Atlanta it will get really ugly, really fast. I don't expect it to be bad for me.
Peace.

real difference here is school size, which LSU is the state school system in Louisiana, where as Clemson was a fairly small to medium sized military college that didn't become a University until the 1960's. I'd give Clemson the definite nod in terms of academics, alumni, and tradition. You only listed one for Clemson for instance *l* when there are many, and "Death Valley" is a Memorial Stadium--which again goes back to that military tradition, and is very much where much of the university's heritage and passion partially comes from.
As far as football, you hadn't won a national championship until recently, since 1958 (when you played a lesser ranked 8-2 Clemson team with a great defense, and only scored one touchdown) to seal the championship. Who knows how that game would have turned out if you had played a Top 5 team from a larger school that year? Plus Clemson had 4 other undefeated teams that were unrecognized as champions mainly because of school size and politics during those eras.
Point being, in terms of recent success, I would certainly give LSU the nod. But words like tradition and history are not just about the present.
In terms of women, that (like most of this stuff) is purely subjective. But I personally, like many men, prefer "quality" over "quantity."

Clemson is far superior than LSU in academics...
Dec 26, 2012, 9:44 PM

The academics between the two school is not even close. Here are some rankings from USNews.com
--Clemson #68 National Rank #25 Public School Rank #63 High School Counselors #7 Up and Coming Schools
--LSU #134 National Rank #67 Public School Rank #121 High School Counselors
I don't see how you can say LSU is remotely close to Clemson in regards of education.
