Chris Fowler on Hayes' punch of Bauman: He brought the hips and the core

he film and the images from the punch are dark and grainy at best, but the memories of a fateful night in the Gator Bowl are as clear as the ramifications it engendered. Full Story »

That was the second Clemson bowl game

that I attended, and it was great!

Calling it a "punch" is extremely generous. More of a cuff

Woody was a pretty feeble old man by this time and his frustrated glancing side arm swipe at Charlie Bauman's helmeted noggin was actually a little bit pathetic.

What a sad way for a guy like Hayes who was an icon, to end his career.

I lost respect for Keith Jackson as an announcer that night. He knew what had happened but he was afraid to mention it.

Keith Jackson did know what happened

I will never forget it. After the play, they were breaking for commercial and you could clearly hear Keith saying "Did you see that!" I could not believe it when they came back on and said absolutely nothing.

Charlie Baughman said nobody hit him even though it was pretty obvious. He said, "Woody Hays is a great coach." I know Baughman lived in Ohio for a long time working as an engineer and may still be there.

It drives me crazy when people mention coaches like this as legends or talk about what they "did" for the sport. Guys like Woody and Joe Pa were always a POS. Being a good coach doesn't change what was in their nature.

ABC showed the replay but stopped it before the punch. The announcers kept commenting that they 'don't know what caused the fight'. They knew what happened. It was certainly a different time in TV sports.

Chris Fowler and ALL of ESPN hates Clemson***
