Charleston golf question

Jul 4, 2021, 3:06 PM

Going there soon and grandson who plays High School golf is going too. I want to get him to a nice coastal course that wont break the bank. We are staying at Wild Dunes so I may find a deal there. I was hoping we could find one he would enjoy elsewhere too but I dont know the courses in the area that well. If you picture a kid hitting it lefthanded with a swing similar to Sergio you have and idea of his swing. He is in the 80's right now and could go lower if he can avoid a big number on a hole or two during his round. Thanks for any insights or deals you know of. BTW 74 is usually my back nine score. :)

Years ago I played in a tournament at Dunes West on Mount Pleasant. I haven’t been back since, but it was a very nice and challenging course, designed by Arthur Hills. It's not an Oceanside course, but it has lots of water and marsh.

Dunes West is a nice course!

Incidentally, Arthur Hills was a good friend of mine and a great architect. He died about a month or so ago. I think he was about 92. Lots of great stories about him.

Patriots point is on the harbor. It has a really fun island green on 17 over looking the harbor and fort Sumter. Excellent hole for a “closet to the pin” side game

I was a member at Wescott Plantation before I moved back to God’s Country. I always enjoyed Stono Ferry and Charleston National. Dunes West is fine but plays a little long. Stono is beside the Intercoastal Waterway. National is beside a lot of salt marsh.

32 years in Charleston

Patriots - decent layout but not always maintained. Very close to Charleston and great views of the harbor.
CHS National - best all around (reasonably priced and accessible) course with a good layout. Back nine is a must (bring balls).
Muni - just redone and reportedly excellent. Lowest price
Stono Ferry - fun, but a ways from Wild Dunes
Dunes West - good resi course but nothing special.
Wild Dunes Links - awesome, well worth the fees and right where you are staying
Wild Dunes Harbor - same and good, solid course.
Most Kiawah courses are excellent. Good drive from Charleston though and pricey.
Best: Bulls Bay, Cacique, Ocean Course, Yeamans Hall - find a member.

This is what you need

I live at the National. It’s a great course. But I’ll warn you that we’re very busy these days. So plan accordingly. I played Crowfield (Goose Creek) today just to get through a round in a normal window.

I would avoid Patriot Links. They have pretty much given up on taking care of that course with the pending renovation. The views are the best of the town + water but the course brings it down. Stick with Wild Dunes Harbor for awesome ocean-scape.

I like Dunes West also. But I think Rivertown has better views (Wando River) for that area. Gorgeous final hole coming into the clubhouse. Price is similar to Dunes West.

Well I’m on #1 at Crowfield. If u had a great drive, you would be looking at my patio. About 85 yds to center of green from my backyard.

Just go to the Harbor Course in Wild Dunes

Jul 5, 2021, 7:37 PM

$84 after 1pm. No driving necessary for a decent deal:
