CFP

Oct 26, 2022, 8:23 AM

There has been a lot of talk on here about whether we are good enough to compete against other teams in the CFP. The answer for me is, I have no idea. We have looked pretty bad at times throughout the year but I am reminded that the 2016 team looked atrocious at times and still had the juice to get it done in the end. What I do know is that UGA did all they could to lose to a pitiful Missouri team. UT tried desperately to lose to a Pitt squad that got run out of the stadium by Georgia Tech. I watched all of UM's game against PSU and I believe that that time could have been better spent watching paint dry. Their offense shouldn't scare anyone. OSU seems to be the only world-beaters this year but their schedule is almost always backloaded. We will know a lot more after they play a rival like Penn State.

All this is to say that maybe we do get blown off the field by a UGA or OSU in the CFP (though that is preferably to trucking anyone in the Citrus Bowl) but no one has solidified their rarified air just yet. And no coach on the planet is better than William Christopher Swinney at getting teams to peak at the right time. I still have much hope for this season.

OSU will only prove, like Michigan, PSU is over rated. Maybe closer because of playing at home but I don’t expect Franklin to out coach anyone in a big game. In regards to the CFP, it will take improvement in our passing game each week moving forward and playing hard and smart for 4 quarters. DJ and Shipley up the middle as 80% of our offense won’t cut it against the top tier teams.

Clemson and Ohio State are the only good teams this season.
UGA is slow to score.
Alabama is in a Clemson last year situation.

Teams that i ignore
Tennessee is a fad.
Michigan is like Notre Dame.

To me, anointing OSU as unbeatable or some special elite team at this point is hugely premature. Look at their schedule thus far:
vs. Notre Dame W, 21-10
vs. Arkansas State W, 45-12
vs. Toledo W, 77-21
vs. Wisconsin W, 52-21
vs. Rutgers W, 49-10
at Michigan State W, 49-20
vs. Iowa W, 54-10

Anything jump out at you? The lack of the word “at”. Let’s revisit when they have played a more, shall we say, balanced schedule.

Great post CURev. Nothing is done until the oven timer goes to zero. I just hope we don't stumble the last 5 games and have a chance to see how we stack up.

Unfortunately, Penn State is gonna get another beatdown

Oct 26, 2022, 8:53 AM

Then James Franklin will be named as a leading candidate for a open HC gigs.

He's got some mystical powers over College AD's, cause he has produced absolutely nothing.

Franklin went 6-7, 9-4 and 9-4 in three seasons at Vandy with 2 bowl wins. I repeat, at VANDY. That’s producing something.

At PSU, he inherited a severely damaged brand after O’Brien bolted only a few years after the Sandusky/Paterno horrible situation. He’s gone 73-35 with 2 NY6 wins.

Can he win the big one to get to the B1G championship game over OSU and UM? No. But he’s a pretty good coach and it’s understandable why an AD would give him a look when jobs come open.

The only thing I don't like is this constant comparison to the 2016 team. The ability of the players on that team had already been established in the previous year. It's unknown if these players have that same skill level.

That is why we have playoffs and they needed to be expanded

Oct 26, 2022, 9:12 AM

Since there will be honest debates about the quality of certain undefeated conf champs as well as 1 loss non-conf champs, it was necessary to expand the playoffs and end all the speculation on the field of play. I was for an 8 team playoff b/c I think 12 requires the playoff teams to play too many games in a season, but alas. An expanded playoff is needed to remove all the opinions out of it.

For example, what if:

- TCU and Clemson are undefeated conf champs
- TN, UGA, OSU and UCLA have only 1 loss but don’t win conf
- Oregon wins PAC with 1 loss
- Bama wins SEC with 1 loss
- Mich wins B1G with 1 loss

Who should be left out? Certainly not any of the undefeateds. Certainly not conf champions. But that leaves 5 teams for 4 spots. So now what?

Thus why the playoffs needed to be expanded.

Will there be teams that will get blown out in the playoffs? Yes! But this way you determine which teams that will be ON THE FIELD OF PLAY, not in some biased committees minds that are listening to all this Joel Klatt and eSECPn punditry!

Re: That is why we have playoffs and they needed to be expanded

Oct 26, 2022, 9:34 AM

That isn't a reason to expand the playoffs. That is an excuse to expand the playoffs.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Then who is the one conf winner you would leave out…

Oct 26, 2022, 10:51 AM

In the scenario I just gave? It isn’t a far fetched scenario that is unlikely to happen.

To this point, there hasn’t been too much of a conundrum, but that is not going to be that way as more teams are finally starting to get better. TN , Mich and FSU have been left for dead the past 5 years. They are coming back into relevance now. TCU and Baylor are starting to come into relevance. The PAC is finally showing signs of life. It is just a matter of time that there will be a legitimate argument for more than 4 teams to be in the playoffs. I don’t see it as an excuse, but hey, I am just one person with an opinion.

Personally, I want to see more meaningful matchups in the post season b/c a lot of the bowls don’t cut it. An expanded playoff format helps with that. I just think 12 is too many and 6 is an uneven #. Thus why I landed on 8. But again, I’m just one guy with an opinion and at the end of the day, I’m not gonna affect what the money grabbers are going to decide anyway. I just want Clemson to win and be able to either win or lose on the field of play instead of having to rely on opinionated punditry and committees. If you don’t make it in with 8 teams, then the odds are you shouldn’t have been there to begin with. JMO.

Yes I think we can hang with any team in the country especially with 3-4 weeks to heal up and prepare. I just hope Clemson doesn’t get in the way of Clemson.

Re: CFP

The bottom line....

On any given day it's possible for an inferior team to best a great team. Timing and luck can be everything. This is why they play the game instead of cancelling it to declare the perceived better team the winner. Without the weirdness of football there would never be a betting line and no gambling.

Recall, the 2018 CFP Final. Alabama supposedly had the greatest team of all time on the field and many didn't give Clemson a chance. We blew the ever living doors off of that best ever Bama team.
