CBS on Clemson

Week's grade

Clemson A Home wins over Louisville and Duke this week aren't quite cause for celebration in the same way they would be in year's past, but Clemson did topple both teams this week to keep its undefeated ACC record intact. The Tigers are two games up in the league race and one of the big surprises of the season.

Also, Clemson #25 (Duke #26) in their Top 25+1

https://www.cbssports.com/college-basketball/rankings/top25/

Clemson coach Brad Brownell entered this season once again on the so-called hot seat -- or at least that was the perception within the industry -- and in possession of a team picked to finish 11th in the Atlantic Coast Conference.

That's a scary combination.

Things didn't get off to the best of starts, either. The Tigers lost to a South Carolina team now ranked 269th in the NET in their second game of the season, then lost to a Loyola Chicago team now ranked 283rd in the NET in their 11th game of the season. Those are both Quadrant 4 defeats. Yuck. But Clemson has responded with a seven-game winning streak and is now 15-3 overall and 7-0 in the ACC following Saturday's 72-64 victory over Duke in which Brevin Galloway finished with a season-high 17 points and four rebounds.

"I was so emotional out there just realizing what was going on," Galloway said. "To go out there and perform the way I did on that stage was great for me."

And great for Clemson.

There's still a long way to go, obviously, but let the record show that Clemson now has at least a two-game lead over everybody else in the ACC standings, and that KenPom.com is currently projecting the Tigers to finish tied for first in the conference with Virginia. If it goes down that way, Clemson would claim its first ACC regular-season championship since 1990.

With all of this in mind, the Tigers have entered Sunday morning's updated CBS Sports Top 25 And 1 daily college basketball rankings at No. 25 despite mostly shaky computer numbers and a resume featuring two Quadrant 4 losses. (Note: TCU is the only other team in the Top 25 And 1 with even one Q4 loss, and TCU's Q4 loss came more than two months ago in a game in which two of its top three scorers did not play.)

Simply put, at some point, Clemson's perfect ACC record featuring four Quadrant 1 victories has to be respected, and, I think, we've finally reached that point following Saturday's win over Jon Scheyer's Blue Devils, who are down to 26th in the Top 25 And 1 and just 3-3 in their past six contests.

emphasis on those two losses, while disregarding all the good WINS the team has put together. Bad though they may have been, each of them still only counts as one loss, not ten or twenty. C'mon, Man.

Because the ACC is so down, we just beat our first ranked team and they won't even be ranked after this week so the strength of schedule is working against us when compared to those bad losses.

JK and others get mad when BB is challenged about his abilities as a coach but apparently, it is a little more than disgruntled Clemson fans who have noticed:

"Clemson coach Brad Brownell entered this season once again on the so-called hot seat -- or at least that was the perception within the industry"

I have no problem with people questioning his coaching ability.

That’s their right.

I disagree, and have plenty of evidence to support my view, but that doesn’t mean I’m “mad.”

Me thinks...

the pollsters may be taking the same approach as some of the fans, including me. We've all seen this movie countless times only to end-up disappointed with the ending. Consequently, the enthusiasm is tempered with cautious optimism.

When was the last time we were 7-0 in conference and ranked in mid January?

The 7-0 is a total red herring. In 2020 we spent three weeks inside the top 20 in January. So not nearly as unprecedented as you imply - But you’d probably actually have to care about basketball to remember things like that. We aren’t even there yet. Then we lost 4 of 5 on our way to being bounced by Rutgers in the first round. You can forget making the tourney if we lose 4 of our next 5 this year.

That team wasn’t that good

Aamir was a human foul machine and brad made pj sit the bench all year. Nobody could score. Think this year’s edition of the brads is way better

Clark Kellogg was pretty high on us during CBS's

1

Saturday hoops preview show. There was a segment on who would actually take the ACC crown this season and he was very complimentary of our roster and playing style, especially compared to others in the league, and felt we would hold that spot. The best part is, he's not wrong.

Go Tigers!

If they can keep playing like they are and stay away from injuries, I would agree they have a great chance. However, I do think we need to shoot a little better along the way to make that happen. I don't think we will keep going 3 for 17 from the 3-point line like we did against Duke but we will need to get back to a more consistent percentage like we were earlier.

Duke's primary game plan seemed to be geared towards smothering our perimeter play, and for a large part it worked very well. Couldn't get clean shots off and had trouble operating from there getting the ball inside. Relying a little more on transitional play and our guards creating opportunities driving the ball inside opened the door for us enough.

Excellent job on the staff's part adjusting for this. Would expect to see similar defensive strategies employed against us in the future considering our strengths there. Happy we had an opportunity to experience that at this juncture in the season to work that into our planning.

The most encouraging part of the win Sat was that our stars

didn't show out.

We showed depth, good teams can win different ways and overcome a player or two having a bad game or being shut down by the opposition.

We actually got some offensive rebounds, too.
