Deadbeats. I ####### hate deadbeats.

I shouldn't let this bother me so much but this seriously pisses me off.
Basically:
-guy buys custom sign off our website. We produce and ship it to him.
-A few days later he disputes credit card charge saying 'item not received'. Does not attempt to ask us before he disputes charge
-We reach out to customer to inquire and provide tracking info
-He still insists he didn't receive item and asks for another item to 'replace' the first
-We reply that since he stopped payment on charge we haven't been paid but he can place a new order and we will rush it to him in time for his event
-He replies that oh sorry he found it so nevermind
-We reply that we still need payment
-He says I can cancel dispute
-We reply thanks but we will need separate payment still since he canceled first
-He says we should see it in a few days
-We send multiple follow up emails to make payment and no response
Not only does this deadbeat POS steal the sign, now we get a $25 charge from credit card company and won't get paid for the charge no matter how much documentation we provide.
It's only a $50 order but still it grinds my gears.

It would seem that you would have some sort of recourse with your billing

company, POS company, something like that. You have acknowledgement in writing from the client that they found the item and they should be able to reverse the reverse, making everyone whole again.

emails where he admits getting item and I submitted it to credit card processing company to dispute the chargeback.
But it won't help. We have done the same before and no matter what they never pay up, I guess too afraid of pissing off credit card customers.

Your story reminds me of what my wife goes through often (and anybody selling to the public online) with her eBay gig. She sells about $1k a month through that channel.
Holy p00 the number of grifters on that platform. She resells vintage clothing. Sometimes items are sold for +$500 but more often in the < $20 range. The amount of time she has to deal with the grifters and their shenanigans and eBay to keep her rating up - I don’t think it’s worth it.
