First, many religious leaders have been exposed to be the antithesis of their alleged religious values and void of morality. From TV evangelists, to Catholic priests, to Protestant ministers and youth ministers, the public cases of abuse and lack of morality are too numerous to count.
Second, social media starting with the popularity of Facebook, Twitter and other platforms have exposed the moral hypocrisy of some (not all) church attendees.
It’s understandable how some have simply said “no thanks” to organized religion.

example of this. If he’s truly a faithful Catholic then the pope has a responsibility to counsel him to do good. If he does things that don’t follow the teachings of the church the pope also has a responsibility to speak out about it.
