This is the most profound truth:

From Genesis 15:
"12 And when the sun was going down, a deep sleep fell upon Abram; and, lo, an horror of great darkness fell upon him.
13 And he said unto Abram, Know of a surety that thy seed shall be a stranger in a land that is not theirs, and shall serve them; and they shall afflict them four hundred years;
14 And also that nation, whom they shall serve, will I judge: and afterward shall they come out with great substance.
15 And thou shalt go to thy fathers in peace; thou shalt be buried in a good old age.
16 But in the fourth generation they shall come hither again: for the iniquity of the Amorites is not yet full.
17 And it came to pass, that, when the sun went down, and it was dark, behold a smoking furnace, and a burning lamp that passed between those pieces...."
Here's what I get out of that:
12. Abraham fell asleep and had a nightmare. God revealed that
13. Abe's children would end up in slavery for 400 years in a foreign land. They had to leave Abraham's homeland so Abraham live in the land of promise, Canaan.
14. Those who enslaved them would suffer judgement for the abuses Abe's family would exit with great wealth.
15. You won't live to see it but it must be so because the Amorites haven't reached the point in which they are beyond redemption yet.
16. Evidently at that time a generation was 100 year.
17. In those days a contract or covenant was sealed by the lesser of the participant walking between those pieces and declaring that if he breaks the deal, violates the contract, he saying 'may I be made as these animals and be cut in half, basically he is asking to be killed.
In this case the lesser did not walk between the animals severed bodies. It was the greater ho swore that if the covenant was broken He would be killed. In this case God was faithful. On that certain day He was nailed to the cross to cover our sin.
BTW, Fordtunate Son, now we might understand how Melchizedek was in the region, what he was doing there and why Abraham gave a 10th of the spoil to him. He was God's man in the region at the time. That satisfies me and I hope you got enough to satisfy your query.
For your edification:
"The Amorites are not specifically mentioned as inhabitants of the ancient city of Salem, which is often identified with Jerusalem. However, they were known to occupy regions in Canaan, including areas around Jerusalem, during biblical times."

That's a good thought on Melchizedek, 88. Thanks for tagging me on that.
I hope to be back on the board full force maybe early in the summer, depending on how my long my new work obligations last. I'm still here lurking, I just don't quite have the time to contribute as much as I'd like. I'll be back soon, dear friend

Salem, Melchizedek residence at the time is known to have been the city of Jerusalem. God sent a man to the Amorites to warn them of impending judgement. I don't think it's unwarranted to believe that all those in the region were warned of their service to false Gods.
This then, is a warning to all, though my main focus here is on Jesus, God's judgement is a real at the Sun and stars. It's a sure at the night and day. God was extremely patient with the Amorites for the time between Melchizedek, Abraham and the return of the children of Israel to that region was over 400 years. I don't think we have that much time to reconsider God's give of a Savior.
If called upon to testify at your judgement, I assure you, it's possible under some circumstance I might lie for you in this life. For that to happen I'd have to be deceived and also deceive myself. I know for a fact that I can not and have never deceive God for over the years I look back and see the times I tried but only fooled myself.
