Brittney Griner sentenced to 9 years in a Russian prison. Grinner says she didn't intend to break any Russian law. I guess she thought that Hashoil wasn't illegal in Russia as long as she had a legal prescription for it in the US. So advice would be, before entering any country, at least find out what prescription drugs are illegal in the that country you're about to enter bc, it could turn into a longer stay in their prison!!!

I totally agree, but there is no way I would enter another country without knowing if any of my medications would be illegal bc I'm on some pretty strong pain meds daily, and I would know the law before I took them into any country. If they would be considered illegal, I wouldn't be making that trip, I would cancel, or I would find out if there was any that equaled what I take, that was legal!!!

This is what I know that was said in the news, Grinner has a legal prescription for the Hash oil from a doctor in Arizona. Yes I know, she wasn't in Arizona. But I do wonder if she was caught in a state in the US where it wasn't legal, would she be charged and tried in that state?

In SC, if she had less than an oz, she would be charged with simple misdemeanor possession. Even with a prescription. Would be arrested, fined and released. No big deal.
Penalties increase over an oz.

So she didn’t bring illegal substances into a foreign country? Is the 9 years more than if she had been a Russian citizen?
I remember being on a bus from Amsterdam and crossing into Germany. The tour people were adamant that if you had brought any cannabis from Amsterdam it better go in the toilet before we got there. When we stopped at the border they brought drug dogs onboard, carrying sub-machine guns. They don’t play games in other countries like we do here.

What gets me is our government running around saying she is being “wrongfully detained”.
She broke the law in another country and got caught. She even plead guilty.
If they want to swap criminals to get her off the hook, that’s their prerogative, but she is not being wrongfully detained.

Now the real negotiations begin. Russia wants to paint her in the most serious light they could to increase their leverage.
She will be exchanged for the one criminal already offered or perhaps a second one will be thrown in.

I’m more concerned with the Americans that were stranded in Afghanistan…
Learn the law before you travel out of the country. Other nations don’t have the revolving door law enforcement system as we currently have in the US.
Being an American in Russia is probably not recommended going forward.
