Bowl game question
Nov 19, 2014, 3:08 PM
|
|
On Qualk's show today, someone asked if Clemson would go to the Orange Bowl if we were to beat USC and Georgia were to beat GT next Saturday. Qualk said no, but did not elaborate on that answer (or if he did, I was already out of the car and didn't hear it).
Why would we not go to Miami in this case? We would be the highest ranked ACC team not in the playoff. Isn't that the rule for the Orange Bowl?

Not even sure I want to go to the Orange Bowl this season...

I get it that recruits see that kind of stuff, but I am embarrassed to say, we have done nothing to earn a spot in this bowl game. It will have asterisks all over it if we win, and if we lose, there will be so many "I told you so" comments from the nation wide NCAAF fans that I would much rather finish the season 10-3 (assuming Cole doesn't start vs. Carolina) in a Belk bowl than to have a repeat 2011 Orange Bowl.
In other words, don't even bother getting your hopes up for this to happen.

I think the reason he said no is because granted the rules say the highest ranked ACC team; the tie in does not work if the team has 3 or more losses with too many 1 or 2 lose teams. The Orange bowl would surely take two other teams to play due to the severity of the loss to GT. I know they were ranked but the game still falls on the teams shoulder and no one would want to be associated with a team that does not finish strong due to coaching issues/ or player issues depending on who wants to shoulder the blame.

It doesn't matter if it is 3 or 5 losses. The ACC has a tie-in to the Orange bowl and that means an ACC team will be playing in it no matter what.

goes to OB. Also, they do not have the one loss rule anymore so the OB would select who they thought would buy more tickets while being a good matchup

Depends on how the games go

If GT loses by a field goal and we win by a field goal, not sure we would move past them in the rankings.

I believe that you are forgetting Duke. They will probably get their 10th win Thursday night. They will play Fla.St. in the ACCCG.A loss could keep them out and throw the game to another conf.

I think there is some confusion on bowl selection

The Orange Bowl has zero say in who plays in the Orange Bowl. The Orange Bowl will be based on the final college football playoff rankings. The highest ranked ACC team not in the top 4 will play the highest ranked SEC / Big 10 / ND team not ranked in the top 4. . . plain and simple.

I don't think Duke is in a position to jump Clemson with games vs Wake and UNC. That leaves GT, a loss to UGA may or may not drop them past Clemson but if Duke loses and GT loses to FSU in the champ game I think they are definitely behind Clemson.

Just no.
If Clemson creams scar with Watson we will be the highest ranked of GT, Duke, Louisville.
Unless Louisville somehow wins out...they could jump us.

chosen to play in the OB, but they can't take the ACC teams slot. We/Duke/Louisville could play ND in the OB, but I don't believe they can take the ACC teams place. ND plays 5 ACC games, which doesn't qualify them as the ACC representative for the OB.
