Would love an AR. I only have a couple of pistols that I have near or on me at all times. An old .357 at bedside table and a .40 S&W Shield that I CC most always.
Having said that, I thought the weigh-in marked the end of DT and OT topics, lol....

You can get an excellent 5.56 AR from palmetto state armory for $374. All you need is the upper kit and a stripped lower. I put at few hundred rounds through the one I built with no failure to feed or jams. Can’t beat it for the price. I since have upgraded to another stock and put a a scope on it and I’m extremely happy!

Just so you know PSA has Complete upper with BCG and CH for $199.99 Lower build kit for $69.99 Stripped lower for $39.99 Thats a complete AR15 for about $310. Plus tax of course. I think shipping is free for all of that. The lower has to be picked up at the store as it must be registered. You'd need some sort of rear sight.

40 S&W shield is the best and most accurate compact simi auto that I have ever fire, and I have owned and fired many makes and models. I have fired over a 1000 rounds through mine and my wife's shield's with a lot of different brands of ammo, and not once in either has a jam or a miss fire occured, never!!! And they do very well with the buffalo bore +P 155 Grain Jacketed Hollow Point. Personally, I wouldn't susgest this type of ammo for target shooting, but, shoot a box through just to get the feel bc it is powerful ammo that packs a punch. Wife and I both keep the Plus P ammo in ours for protection only. But to stay in practice with our aim, and just target practice, we fire target practice loads, the cheap ####. Also, if you try Plus P ammo of any brand, be sure to wear ear protection bc they do have a serious crack when they are fired....

I love mine! It is extremely accurate for what it is. I saw a guy on YouTube hitting targets routinely with it at 75 - 100 yards ??.
Plus, I can wear shorts and a t-shirt and no one knows I am carrying, the profile is almost nothing.

around in various places ready if needed. Different models and like them all. Have a model 49 that has the hammer shroud that's a great when I need one for the back pocket. For rifle have to go with my Henry .22 (with Leopold scope) for popping squirrels in the yard with sub-sonic shorts from my windows. Shotgun have to go with the old Savage 12-gauge single-shot that I use on varmints if I have to go to the trouble to go outside to get them.

I would have went back with a magnet and got them back. K&J Magnets has magnets so strong that even getting close to one of your weapons in the river, they will bring them back to you. K&J is where I found small magnets strong enough to hold my 40 shild on the side of my end table where I set watching TV, and it has never fell off. I can drop my hand off the arm of my chair onto the grips of my 40, and no one has ever noticed it hanging there with two small magnets!!!

Define "core".
My favorites are Pistol??? I always liked my dads 38 special but I don't really shoot pistols. I can do without really so I'll take an extra long gun.
Rifle: Remington 700 25-06 Semi/Auto: Something from the AK 47 family. These guns just don't fail and are fun to shoot. Or a Ruger 22. Shotgun: Gotta be the 870 pump right???
The apocalypse is a far different list tho.
* 22 with a heavy bore. Action is up to the end user. IMO bolt is more reliable. * Springer or nitro-piston .22 pellet gun. Reliable, light weight, silent, deadly, and all you need is a mold to produce pellets out of scrap lead/metal for nearly infinite ammo. * Either a Remington 700 30-06 or Ruger American 30-06 for deadly force at range.

Owned a lot of different firearms over the years but my favorites that I own currently.
Most fun pistol: Ruger SR1911 - .45acp so smooth and accurate. Shot this gun more than any other gun I have owned.
Carry pistol: FNS 9C - got it in FDE 9mm. Get so many compliments at range with it.
Shotgun: Keltec KSG, lot of people seem to hate Keltec but man I love this shotgun, never had one issue or jam in 600 plus rounds. So compact and hold 15 rounds.
AR: POF renegade plus. Seriously one of the best ARs on the market imo, so underrated/not well known. Pretty expensive but it compare to ARs twice it’s cost. I was lucky and got one for a straight up steal, now people started figuring out how good they are and you can’t find them at all, if you do they are $$$.

I forgot, a Daisy Red Ryder lever action 200 shot range rider model with a compass in the stock. My kids got me this for Christmas one year, I guess because I love that movie so much. I 'd also like to have a M1917 Thompson, fully auto, of course, but we are talking expensive, now.

The M1 Carbine was the rifle that was produced the most in WWIl so technically that was the firearm that won the war. The 30 carbine cartridge was lighter for the military to carry because the 30-06 cartridge is heavy and they couldn’t carry many rounds. Also the magazine fed M1 Carbine had a higher capacity than the Garand clips.

My father was an infantryman in the Korean War and started off carrying an M1 carbine. After his first firefight he dubbed the M1 carbine a "popgun" and from that day forward carried a man's weapon - the M1 Garand. Said he never saw a Chinaman get up after being hit with an M1 Garand - not the case with an M1 carbine.
I've owned both the M1 carbine and the M1 Garand - if I have to pick between the two for combat, I'll take the M1 Garand in just about every situation. The comparison of what that Garand 30.06 round does compared to the smaller .30 caliber carbine round is like night and day.

When loaded down with full field equipment I wanted the carbine because of the light weight but for other purposes the old M1 was my choice.

At the end of the day getting shot is getting shot and they are both .30 caliber rounds. I am a 17 year old who has never had to be in a combat situation. I just have modest gun knowledge, but I thank your father for his service

I've never been in that situation, either. I just listened to the stories of the last generation. They were my heros. Now we have a new generation of heros. I'm very proud of them, just as I was the last generation. I can't remember the guys name, but if you've ever seen the hbo series, The Pacific, his was one of the main characters. Before the series aired, someone did an interview with him. His last statement at the end of the interview was, We were called the Greatest Generation, and yes there were many great ones that did come from there, but the truly Greatest Generation will be the generation that turns this country to God. God bless you, young man. You guys are up. Give it your best.

".30 caliber" is just the diameter of the round. There is much more to it than that.
First off, They say a picture is worth 1,000 words so here are the two rounds beside each other.
https://qph.fs.quoracdn.net/main-qimg-8f04b25a16f480f4d70ea64eb47c84e0
Now, basic physics.
Force is defined as F=mA or force = mass x acceleration.
The muzzle veloicy of 30-06 round should from a M1 garand is 853.4 m/s. The velocity of the .30 Carbine (7.62×33mm) round shot from a M1 carbine is 610 m/s.
For those that do not know, bullet weights are measured in grains. The M1 Garand fires a 174 Grain bullet, and the Carbine fires a 110 grain bullet.
This equates to 3,627 joules of energy from the Garand and 1,311 joules of energy from the Carbine. Simple math tells you that there is almost 3 times as much energy in the two .30 caliber rounds.

Agree With The Force Calculation But In Fairness Having 2.5x
Aug 7, 2018, 10:22 AM
|
|
The magazine capacity, Garand 8 and Carbine 20 plus speed of reload going the Carbine about 1-2 seconds faster they each have their bright spots and blemishes. Both are very accurate out to 250 yards (I own both) the Garand then can reach another 200-400 yards with iron sights in the hands of a trained shooter. The weight metric goes to the Carbine as you can pretty much carry a full basic load of 200 rounds and the Carbine and equal just the loaded Garand.
They compliment each other well, a 2 man team one with a Carbine and one with a Garand can perform wonderfully in concert. Both great iconic weapons of Americana.

This is why I said that I'd rather have the M-14 and it's removable mag vs the Garand and the 8 shot clip. :thumbs up:

Said he never saw a Chinaman get up after being hit with an M1 Garand - not the case with an M1 carbine.

The problem with this logic is that you’re rarely going to actually hit the enemy with a round.
The best way to survive a firefight is to get your enemy to duck his head and stop firing at you. I’ll take a smaller round every day if I can carry more of them and it’s a lighter load to carry.

No offense Classof09 - don't know you from Adam, but your statement is the most ridiculous thing I've ever read. I've been in combat more than once and can assure you the best way to survive a firefight is to HIT the person firing at you.

So Classof09 - please enlighten us with all of your military and combat experience. As for myself - 27 years in the Army and more deployments than I can count.
If you believe the delusion that just throwing thousands of rounds down range is the best way to fight a war then I know some Arab armies of which you would fit in very well. As for the US Army training I've received and the units I've served in combat - aimed, controlled fire while integrating available artillery and aviation assets tends to send your haphazard bullet hose theories to their maker rather quickly.

The best way to get your enemy to stop firing at you is to incapacitate him. This is best done with hot lead.

It’s an analogy that should make it easier for you to understand you’re arguing an ideal method and not the best method.
It’s estimated it took 50k rounds for every kill in Vietnam. No one is out there John Wayneing with a one shot one kill method with any real effectiveness.

Look, I won't disagree that suppressing fire has it's time and place (like to help move teammates into move into better or safer positions), but it's not the BEST way to get your enemy to stop shooting at you. That is called DIRECT FIRE.
Suppressing fire is only a temporary solution. Once you stop shooting, generally your enemy starts shooting back. On the other hand, killing or other wise incapacitating your enemy is a permanent solution. This is really Military science 101 type stuff. Had you ever taken those classes, you'd know this.

You’re definitely overthinking (or maybe underthinking is the best way to describe it) this one.
Suppressive fire is literally called “winning the firefight.” I’m not sure what you’re struggling to understand. You’re never going to eliminate an enemy or assault through an element if you dont get them to find cover and stop shooting at your guys.
This isn’t civil war tactics where you’re going to line up and aim at each other.

To the best of my knowledge the M1 carbine, while it was heavily produced by manufacturers like Singer sewing machines, IBM, and others that aren't usually associated with arms manufacturing, it wasn't always a popular choice of weapons. A WWII vet, I worked for many years ago, told me that he carried both, and at one time, a Thompson. He told me that he felt the knock-down power wasn't sufficient, in the carbine. The Thompson wasn't very accurate, and if you weren't careful your ammo was quickly spent. He said the Thompson would be his last choice. He said, both of these weapons were meant for infighting, such as street to street, and jungle fighting where the enemy is at pretty close range. I just recently read pretty much the same thing in a book. The M1 was a very dependable rifle. He also said, he would gladly lug that nine plus pound M1 around, over the other two. My uncle, that was under Patton's command, said he never had any weapon but a 1903 Springfield bolt action. He told me, if you're a good enough shot, one shot is all it will take. I don't know how much action either one of them saw, my uncle would never really open up about his experiences. As far as lighter ammo, and being able to carry more, this was the reason for the M16 with it's .223 bullet. Randy Gardner,(I think was his name, one of the Delta guys that died in Mogadishu), always carried an M14. He said that when he had shot enemies with the 16, they some times would get back up. With the M14, they didn't tend to do so. Don't know how much of this is fact, and how much was fiction, just what I've read, and what I've been told, and my uncle and former boss were both pretty honorable people, so I'll take their words for it. And I'm not being critical of your post. I would have thought, hands down, the Garand was the most highly produced rifle of the war. However it is still my baby. I'm just worried that one day it will need repairs, and I won't be able to find parts.

Both the 30-06 and the .308 are very effective rounds. If given the choice between the two, I'd personally go with the M14, because 1). That's what we carried in Charleston, and 2). The removable magazine is superior to the clip that goes with the Garand.
But on the other hand, Patton wasn't wrong when he said that the M1 was, “The best battle implement ever devised."

It's not the commies. It's the socialist, that worry me. If the Second amendment is ever repealed, I think this country will be in deep do. My son, who can be pretty liberal minded sometimes, feels the same way.

This has been one of the best threads, I've read in a while. It's been interesting to see what kind of guns people have, I've learned some stuff, that I didn't know, and probably the best part is, that there's been no bickering, arguing or name calling. It's been pretty cool.

Dudes, if you plan on hiding something from a government trying to take it you should be shooting them by that point. What you gonna do, go dig up your rifle after the tyrannical government has already stripped everyone? Get real. I saw defy them every step along the way

I am a FIRM believer, that you should NEVER, EVER talk about your guns in "Public".
There are a variety of reasons for this, but it all boils down to you can never be too careful.
