I forget which year, but I saw him play in the North/South Doubleheader in Charlotte at the old Coliseum. SC was already out of it, GT taking its place. I was not yet a Clemson fan, but loved watching Butch, who was incredible (dad was a GT grad, had the tix). One night Clemson was being physically beaten up by NC, the refs letting NC mob Clemson. With about 2 minutes left a Clemson player went down in the paint, blood streaming from his nose, no call. Tates Locke waved his coat in the air, called his players off the floor and into the locker room: forfeited. Leaving the floor, they got a standing O from everyone in the arena except the NC fans. I became a Clemson fan that night.
A couple of years later GT won the tournament with Rich Yunkus at center. Great college player. Seeing NCSU and NC lose back to back was wonderful.
