Forgetting for a moment that we're Tiger fans, if we can, who do you think is the biggest under-achiever at this point in the season?
I'd think the top candidates would be:
Florida State - nobody expected them to be great, but I don't think anyone expected 0-4, esp after taking ND to OT in the opening week
Ohio State - still looking for a QB, narrow wins against teams they should otherwise be expected to blow out
Texas A&M - pretty much a cross between us and Ohio State
UNC - high expectations with Sam Howell in the saddle again.
And our dear Tigers - 2-2, nuff said
Not saying that any of these - especially Clemson - won't/can't rebound and finish strong, but just looking at Sept, curious the thoughts of the bored.
As objectively as I can possibly be, I'd have to say that we're the biggest underachiever so far, followed by FSU, OSU, UNC and TA&M.
But like CDS said yesterday, they don't hand out trophies in September. We still have a great shot to finish strong, if we can get things fixed on offense and overcome injuries on defense. Gonna be a tough fight.
I don't believe our team is underachieving because our offense is what it is. DJ's glaring flaws combined with a sorry O-line that can't run-block (and barely pass-blocks) simply means our offense is no good. Expectations were just too high. 2-3 more losses are coming. There won't be a huge turnaround.
Regarding OU, I've said since last year Spencer Rattler isn't all that. You give him a perfect pocket with no pressure and he is very good. He has NFL arm-talent. But when he's forced to make decisions under duress the guy crumbles, makes mistakes and often loses confidence for periods of time.
I was never on the Sam Howell UNC bandwagon.
FSU does strike me as a team that is playing well below its talent level. This is so disappointing because getting more out of players compared to his predecessor should have been a layup.
Although I live in Texas, I'm not dialed in on the Aggies. They seem to have a good amount of talent everywhere but QB. Too bad QB is the most important position.
Ohio State's D-line performance (and their defense overall) is clearly a coaching issue. It is blatantly obvious they are under-achieving. Jeff Hafley was a huuuuge loss for them. His next stop is the NFL, which is where he belongs.
