Best BBQ in PeeDee area?

Apr 27, 2015, 10:44 AM

Im going to be making a road trip from Charlotte to Pawleys Island soon and will be driving through many rural towns in the PeeDee section of SC.

For those who live there, what are some of the best BBQ spots to hit up?

Based on my research, the following sound good:

Shuler's- Latta
School House- Scranton/Lake City
Scott's- Hemingway

Anybody have suggestions?

Years ago there was a place called Country Cousin's . That place had that beat-all vinegar based jazz down like a fiffa Crown.

Brown's in Kingtree

Apr 27, 2015, 11:01 AM

Basically the best BBQ on earth

I second that notion, except for on earth. It is good. Sauce is good.

Shuler's was featured on CNBC's "The Profit" last season...

They did some sirius renovations and added a LARGE flagpole in front.

Brown's in Kingstree. The bbq is excellent, and they have a great buffet. Scott's has a really good flavor, but they chop it up too much.

We go camping all the time and have tried about every BBQ place in South Carolina and by far Schulers is the best. When we go to Little Pee Dee we travel the 25 minutes to eat there. The best time to go is at night, that is when they serve the ribs ( best in the state). While you're there gotta met Norton Hughes (owner) one of the friendliest people you'll ever meet.

Scott's is really good, but Shulers is my favorite

Apr 27, 2015, 11:15 AM

They have both spicy and regular pulled pork, their ribs fall off the bone, and you have to try the fried corn on the cob. I ate their last Thursday.

Shulers by far the best. Best ribs ever. Also, it is on SC-38 between I-95 and US-301 which is probably close to your route.

Stop at Brown's (Kingstree) to eat buffet AND then stop in Hemingway

Apr 27, 2015, 12:14 PM

to pick up a couple pounds to go from Scott's to take to Pawley's with you (you're going to need to call Scott's and put in an order before you leave).

Scott's has the best Williamsburg County-style (pepper and vinegar) BBQ , but its not exactly a user-friendly, full-service restaurant. Brown's is a close second, and is a comfortable break for the travel-weary.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Scott's is GREAT - love that pepper/vinegar style of bbq***

I live in Atlanta and stop at one of these places......

Apr 27, 2015, 12:17 PM

that serve the Eastern NC style barbeque I like whenever I go to the Pawleys area. In fact, will be stopping probably at Scott's to take barbeque to Litchfield in four weeks:

- D&H Barbeque in Manning (barbeque is real good plus they have a great buffet if you sit down to eat inside)

- McCabe's in Manning (barbeque is better than D&H but they're more of a hole in the wall type of place with no sides to get to speak of)

- Scott's in Hemingway (my favorite - their barbeque is great!)

Re: I live in Atlanta and stop at one of these places......

Scott's was just recently rated #1 BBQ joint in S.C. in one publication. McCabe's in Manning is good and so is a place in Georgetown but I cannot remember the name. As you probably know, many BBQ places only open Thurs.-Sat.

Hard to find superb BBQ in Florence these days

Apr 28, 2015, 8:25 AM [ in reply to Re: Best BBQ in PeeDee area? ]

In addition to Rogers, Woodstone BBQ and Cain's BBQ on Pamplico Highway are not what they used to be. Woodstone lost quality when it changed owners and names (I can't even remember the old name). Don't get me wrong they're both good, but are they the cream of the crop? Eh.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Hard to find superb BBQ in Florence these days

Apr 28, 2015, 8:51 AM

You are right the BBQ in Florence is not the best. Woodstone use to be Woodys BBQ and it was a lot better then. Cains BBQ is good but not the best I ever had.

Re: Hard to find superb BBQ in Florence these days

Apr 28, 2015, 11:01 AM

Woody's, thank you. My in-laws knew the prior owner and we went there a lot. I could eat my body weight in BBQ and chicken bog. Woodstone is...good, but not something I go out of my way to get.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Thats dissapointing to hear

Apr 28, 2015, 2:18 PM

I use to stop at Woodstone's just for the BBQ every time i was driving back to the beach. I havent been there in 2 or 3 yrs so im hoping it hasn't downgraded like you say it has

Big D's in Johnsonville/Hemmingway area and Brown's in Kingstree. Also, Hog Heavan in Pawleys is pretty tasty too! Great veggies and Fried Chicken.

Re: Best BBQ in PeeDee area?

Apr 27, 2015, 2:44 PM

McCabes in Manning and Scott's in Hemingway are both cooked over wood and are good(vinegar and pepper) except they both add something to sweeten up the sauce. Brown's in Kingstree is not sweetened and I prefer it. If going to Brown's make it on Friday or Saturday because they cook on Thursday. If you go on Monday-Thursday, I think you are getting meat cooked the past week. I have gone there early in the week in the past and the meat did not taste as fresh as on Friday/Saturday....

Re: Best BBQ in PeeDee area?

Apr 27, 2015, 7:22 PM

D2, You are welcome. Thomas Brown does a really good job with cooking the vinegar and pepper into the meat instead of chopping it up and then adding sauce like the Lake City places do. He also uses the correct amount of ground red and black pepper to the vinegar that is basted and cooked in the meat yielding the great red gravy. You might sweat just a little during the meal which is proper for Williamsburg BBQ. That is the way I was taught to cook whole hogs by people(both black and white) when I lived there in the 80s. There is nothing like pulling some meat off the hog while still on the pit....Jaybird4

Re: Best BBQ in PeeDee area?

Apr 28, 2015, 7:02 AM

I'm originally from West Andrews which is in Williamsburg county and yes, sweating during consumption of pit-cooked BBQ is proper. My dad use to cook over a wood fire pit and basted the hog while it cooked! What great memories.

Based on responses so far, I think votes would be:
#1- Brown's
#2- Shuler's
#3- Scott's

One other caveat I should mention is I am a purist when it comes to BBQ. I believe it should be cooked using charcoal & wood or wood only. I do not consider gas or electric to be authentic BBQ.

That said, I'm much more interested in which place has the best meat and not the best sides. I get that Scott's doesn't have many sides and isn't the most user friendly, but they were featured in the NY Times I believe so I'm very interested in checking them out.

One of the Yelp reviews for Brown's states they cook with Gas. Can anyone confirm or deny this? I don't want to judge a place so many of you like without going, but if this is true, it might be a deal breaker for me.

Re: There are a ton of great places, and it really boils down to personal preference, but

Apr 28, 2015, 11:18 AM

Ragin, Over the past 30 years I have cooked hogs both ways, oak wood and propane. I tell people that wood is 5% better for twice the work and three times the fuel cost.
It is more important how the hog was cooked than what heat source was used. To properly cook a hog you have to cook it skin side up until the meat is done(skin has separated from meat), flip and baste it with about a gallon of vinegar with pepper added. This last step should take another 3-4 hours to properly cook the vinegar into the meat. During this step you also remove the large ham and shoulder bones as they loosen up from the tenderizing of the vinegar. Finally you dip off the gravy(cooked vinegar, pepper and meat juices that pool up in the rib cavity area) to put over white rice.
I am telling you all of this because it is this process that Brown's uses that many places short cut because it takes time. Many BBQ places flip the hog, place on a stainless steel table and with knives cut it up and add BBQ sauce.
I would much rather have BBQ cooked properly over gas than not cooked properly over wood....Jaybird4

Jay bird,

Does Brown's also use wood to add smoke taste or is it gas powered only?

I knew a guy who owned a BBQ restaurant in Springfield SC that had a hog cooker with gas power to get the cooking process started, but then added in hardwood coals from a burn barrel.

Is that the setup Brown's uses or is it gas only?

Ragin, I am not sure exactly how Brown's cooks his hogs as I have never been in his pit area. It is enclosed and you cannot look in. If I were you I would get some of both Brown's and Scott's. Get a pound or two from Brown's, drive the 20 miles toward Hemingway and get some of Scott's. It is on the way to the beach and you will only add about 10 -15 minutes to your trip. Let us know how it turns out please.....
