Trump's ultimate vision was a completely loyal military that would be willing to turn on civilians if necessary to secure his power. Had he put in a competent, strategic defense secretary who could win their loyalty, he would have gotten a big step closer. The scuttlebutt is that Trump and Hegseth have so royally pissed off the people in that building that this option is pretty much out the window now.
This administration is fascist, alright, but they're executing the dumbest fascist takeover in world history.

True. But still, it's hard to imagine China and Russia (and God knows who else) not taking major advantage of the $hit-show.

Hegseth has the executive and emotional maturity of a middle schooler

Not sure his intellectual capabilities are any better.
He is simply very immature and struggles to behave like an adult _ which essentially negates effective leadership.
The good thing is he looks and sounds good in front of a camera.

Most organizations would try to figure out where can we put this guy so that he doesn’t #### things up until we can figure out how to fire him.

It wasn’t. I get the idea of getting back to the basics of fielding a lethal fighting force and getting away from some of the social experiments in our armed forces.
From what I’ve read, recruitment numbers have been quite good at least in the Army and Marines under Trump/Hegseth.
The change in culture does appear to be attracting more recruits.
However, the DOD is a behemoth of an organization and requires managerial skills that Hegseth doesn’t possess.
As my back door neighbor, a retired career Army officer, West Point grad and Trump voter said,”It’ll take 2 years or more for Hegseth to even begin to figure out what’s going on and this is too big a job for someone with essentially no managerial experience.”
There were far better picks than Hegseth to be DOD Sec., but he may have been an asset in a much lesser role in the DOD.

I see Hegseth as a temporary Sect’y of Defense who has been tasked with identifying bad influences who are very clever. Officers such as Mark Milley come to mind.
The high ranking officers in the military, at least the large majority of them, are exceptionally bright and superbly educated. Such accolades do not exempt them from being predilected towards corruption, disrespect towards the chain of command, or possessed of a political ideology that is antithetical to the ideals of a Constitutional Republic.
Those among the officers who harbor the bad characteristics are, as are their less ‘bad’ cohorts, clever individuals. It is never easy to quickly identify the bad actors via the presidential interview process.
Hiring a full time Sect’y of Defense to see for himself, by virtue of the variety of ways that full time managers see how their subordinates conduct themselves, is a far superior method for figuring out, at least to a more-than-just-superficial extent, which officers can be trusted to carry out their military tasks in a way that is consistent with the foreign policy direction of the civilian government.
The DoD has too many unreliable high ranking officers who will not do their duty if they happen to disagree with how America’s civilian government wants to carry out foreign policy. Sadly, there are officers who, one way or the other / directly or indirectly, allow their military advice to their military or civilian boss to be compromised by self-enrichment objectives.
Regardless of skills, the corrupt / antithetical to civilian primacy over foreign policy military officers must be prevented from sneaking in and getting to the Sect’y of Defense position.
Hegseth’s usefulness is in 5his area.
