so they HELD him instead. Of course, since it was Bama, NO CALL.
Amazing... a fake field goal against a Cover 2 Zone!

the play could have been successful...Christian Wilkins was double teamed and he was being driven down the field. That was the "hole" for the ball.
But if you look, the 3 guys blocking Pinckney really didn't even make an effort, and he pushed right through them. A quicker ball carrier MIGHT have gotten on the hip of the double team and then been able to push through for the yardage. There was blocking there.
So, in my view, lazy attempt by Bama blockers and quick read/reaction by Pinckney + slow ball carrier = terrible fake.

It also confirmed what we were then perceiving; Bama was getting desperate. I've got nothing against a trick play - especially when it works - but Bama was bleeding pretty bad and the call and play, given all the factors made it clear Bama knew they were in trouble.

He really didn't want to be there!LOL! I don't think even with their bestest rb or running qb would they have gotten into any hole that may or may not have been there. Good Times lol!

That’s not the entire picture. Bama needs 6 yards. They did double team 42 and push him back 3 yards. At that point he splits the double and comes free. Pinckney does his job well, and slants inside when he sees the play going there. The OG trying to block him does not get low enough, and the effort isn’t stellar. Pinckney has such a low center of gravity that pushing him out is a hard job, especially for a tall player.
Even if they were able to block our 2 DTs, there are several other players who would likely have stopped a wimpy holder from going 6 yards. The left DE has a shot after beating a double team, 11,12,and 34 all had excellent chances at making the tackle short of the line to gain. That play should have been called only if 2 yards or less was needed. There was no way they were getting 6 yards.

Bama had some pretty good running plays in our game with them, take away those plays, and they were smothered to death through out the whole game....

Their regular running game was getting them near 10 yards per play at that point, going for it wasn't a bad call, its was just the worst way to go for it.

Watch it again. Bama planned that play poorly. They double teamed Wilkins and let Pinckney unblocked by their OL so that way the 2 guys in the backfield could have 1 guy blocking and the other guy running, just like a typical Dive play where the OL double teams a DT, a fullback runs in as lead blocker, and the halfback carries the ball behind the fullback.
The play was planned and executed correctly by Bama. The issue was the personnel. Bama's OLine blocked perfectly. Pinckney was alowed to run free by design, so that way the fullback could block Pinckney for the ball carrier.
Bamas problem was, the placeholder was the ball carrier, and the guy assigned to be the blocking "fullback" to stop 6'4" 300lb Pinckney was Bamas 5'11" 160 lb KICKER.
Watch it again, Bama's kicker was assigned to block Pinckney. You can see when the kicker runs ahead to block into the OL he realizes WHO he is supposed to block, and you can watch him as a look of utter fear crosses his face as he throws his hands up in surrender, terrified while ######## his pants and not even engaging the block as he gets sandwhiched by Pinckney and our other DLineman, and then the entire play collapses.

If you watch the replay the holder keeps looking at the sideline waiting for the signal to call it off and you can see the disbelief in his eyes whe he gets the go signal.

Yes but I enjoyed Nick's face when he admitted...

he hadn't straightened out the issues that allowed people to score on him all season. He's spent so much time trying to teach fundamentals to the Bama heathens he didn't have time to scheme.
I believe Nick will win a ton of games in the SEC this season and take the SECCCG but he's already allowed his defense to deplete. His corners sucked, his Dline wasn't deep or strong enough to pressure a QB without help, he couldn't blitz either the corners, safeties or linebackers because they would leave too much real estate uncovered and still not get there quickly enough to stop a good quarterback from completing a pass.
Bama is a chit defense which depended on the offense's putting up a lot of points early and knocking it out of gear on defense for the rest of the game.

Their offensive line failed so badly the kicker's performance had nothing to do with it.

Greg McElroy said the same thing. I don't see it

Nyles Pinckney blew up his block but even if he hadn't that kid had to run 10-12 yards from where he got it and go through blockers, defenders all converging at the same time. There were linebackers converging, safeties converging and at the same time christian wilkins was standing up his blockers so how was a little holder supposed to barrel through all that?
To make it out like someone simply missed a block is grossly dishonest. Its akin to a lady falling down a set of stairs in public and getting up and walking like nothing happened eventhough everyone saw and are in total disbelief that she's still trying to play it off.

McElroy couldn't bring himself to see what actually happened

The first problem was not calling a time out when Clemson went to a safe package. We didn't rush the kicker and had nine in the box waiting on a fake.
Pickney had three d linemen on him, the kicker's man was behind the line and was most probably the middle linebacker. McElroy is just like Saban, he's going to blame the players.

Trick plays rely on deception. Nobody in the world was deceived by this.
Every Clemson defender was already converging on the guy as soon as the ball was snapped.
No one thought for a second that a FG attempt was coming.
If Pinckney doesn’t drop him behind the line, he still gets nailed after about two yards max.

We've taken two of four and Saban has to earn his seed now. That means his days of cruising through on preseason polls and being matched with people who shouldn't be in the national championship game giving him an easy win are ended.
The playoff will always find the best team and let them prove it on the field.
