Basically anything anyone does on a normal basis requires identification (Driving, flying on an airplane, getting money in/out of the bank, using a credit card, getting a cell phone, renting an apt, buying a car or a house, setting up a checking account) but somehow requiring an ID to vote is racist.
Is requiring an ID for all those other things racist, too?

Voter ID isn't racist.

It would negatively affect racial minorities the most and that's the point, but the motivation isn't racism. The motivation is to prevent Democratic voters from voting. The problem for Republicans is that it looks so much like racism that Democrats can play easily that card.
I only brought it up because I figured it would be a way where everyone gets something: Obama gets his super oppressive mandatory democracy wish and Republicans can have their voter ID cards. Plus you'd have the opposing forces of voter ID disenfranchising voters while a voting requirement encourages voting.

A few years ago, Illinois passed a law that you have to have ID in order to purchase drain cleaner such as Drano.
I thought these same people advocating for this law will turn around and claim racism when it comes to ID in order to vote.
(And I have no problem with showing ID to purchase Drano but think it's hypocritical to advocate for that law but then be on the other side of the voter ID law)
If a person is too poor to get ID in order to vote, I'd think he is also too poor to get ID in order to buy a bottle of Drano. Lol

Voter fraud is close to non-existent. This is a can of worms, though, because you'll probably fire off some anecdotal example of someone who voted in two places or something, which isn't actually voter fraud, or some similar example which doesn't bolster your argument. We'll go back and forth a whole lot and you'll repeatedly be proven wrong. Then this will come up again like a month from now and you'll just say the same crap all over again like it's never been discussed before. It's like it's Groundhog Day and you're Ned Ryerson.

just bc there aren't convictions doesn't mean its not prevelant. How many dead people vote in this country? 9 million SSN numbers are currently being used who are over 112 yrs old. But I'm sure those people dont vote.

That doesn't prove voter fraud.

When more voters are registered than there are eligible voters it is not voter fraud and voter ID does not solve this problem. States will keep voters on the books because they're required to under Section 8 of the National Voter Registration Act, better known as the Motor Voter Law enacted in 1993. So even if they've moved away or died, they're still registered.

I don't think the motivation is to keep dems from voting.
I think the motivation is to keep ILLEGALS from voting and to keep those that choose to vote more than once, honest.

They often don't need an ID to fly on a plane.
Mar 19, 2015, 10:23 AM
|
|
Because they don't often fly on planes. Poor racial minorities spend very little time jet setting. They also probably don't get, say, hunting licenses. If they live in a city they likely don't need driver's licenses.
This is a solution in search of a problem. Illegal immigrants want to vote? Is that what we're supposed to believe? Is there a shred of evidence anywhere that this is an actual problem? And I still can't square how the government identifying and tagging every single citizen is somehow the brainchild of the small government wing in American politics.

How about cash checks?

Do poor racial minorities cash checks? Or get cell phones? Or get apartments? Or electricity and water?
With the rise of activist groups intent on making illegal aliens legal, I'm not sure how you would or wouldn't know if voting fraud was going on.

and a deposit on both.
I'm just trying to understand the hesitance to require an ID. Doesn't make sense to me for something so small. Its just one of those things in life you have to do.

Because it solves a problem that doesn't exist.

You already have to provide ID in order to register to vote:
The federal Help America Vote Act (section 15483(b)(2)(A)) mandates that all states require identification from first-time voters who register to vote by mail and have not provided verification of their identification at the time of registration. The act lists a "current and valid photo identification" or "a copy of a current utility bill, bank statement, government check, paycheck, or other government document that shows the name and address of the voter” as acceptable forms of ID. What little voter fraud there is happens when a voter registers, not on election day. So if we were to tighten up anywhere, it would be there, but I'm not sure how much further we can go than we already do especially considering what a non-problem it is in the first place.

You seem so concerned that it will "solve a problem that doesn't exist" (and if governmnet can solve anything it would be a miracle), when really, noone can prove if in fact it does or doesn't exist. How do we know if there is voter fraud? How might one prove or disprove that?
Obviously, there must be other reasons the more liberal among us fight the voter ID law.

I think it's because it helps his party.
Force young people to vote would help dems.
(I point out young people because there are more of them then there are old people, old people that usually are more conservative)
Just one of the things I hate about the political process, both parties always trying to figure ways to be more in control and in some cases trying to be the only one in control of all)
I think we need both parties, actually more than two parties.

Thats what I'm thinking. Pretty soon we will be turning over power to celebrities if everyone is forced to vote. I just wish we had way more turnover in Washington. Being a politician wasn't meant to be a career. I'm tired of seeing the same people year after year giving us the same ole bullcrap time after time.
