Play every game in the tournament like it's a one game season. Don't look ahead. Don't try to strategize. If that's the case, the only game that mattered was Miami. So why not pitch your best?

because as a Coach you believe in the players you put out there

will they always get it done, nope.
But the Coach has to instill confidence and show he trust each player to come through.
If it was a "true" must win, ok maybe you move the rotation to get your best shot at a must win game but otherwise no use in a meaningless tournament when you are already a top national team.
Go Tigers!!

For someone as young as Knaack with a season pitch count as low as Knaack, throwing on 4 days rest isn't unheard of. Average rest time in MLB is 4 days for starters so I think it's understood that sometimes you may have to break out of your rotation if your team needs you. If he pitched today he would have had plenty of time to rest before regionals

Average rest time for MLB starters is 5 days and their arms are more trained and equipped to handle such a load.
Take that Miami pitcher today for instance. He has thrown over 105 pitches in 10 outings this season...That kid is done and you will never hear from him as a pro. That Miami coach has ruined him..

Thank you! Good grief! The fact that they ignore the fact that Knaack would be in on 4 days rest when he is used to 7 days rest is comical.

I agree. We are gonna leave Charlotte and our Ace will never see the field? News flash when we start regionals, we better go 1-0 out of the gate or season is over! Win today and worry about tomorrow then.. Backich has done great for us but this is just dumb. Might as well pay the league forfeit fee and come on home. Or sit every starter and make it everyone's weekly bullpen session. If we lose Cam or someone in this scrimmage it's gonna be bad!!

THE PURE IDIOCY YOU READ ON THIS SITE IS MIND BOGGLING BUT NOT SURPRISING. HAD WE WON KNAAK WOULD HAVE PITCHED SATURDAY ON REGULAR REST. HE WILL PITCH NEXT WEEK IN GAME 2 AND HENCE GOING FORWARD. TODAYS GAME IS NOT A SCRIMMAGE. HAD WE WON IT WOULD HAVE BEEN LESS IMPORTANT BUT WINS MEAN BETTER SEEDING. SMALL DETAILS I KNOW.

Good thing Bob Gibson didn't know about all these new "Days rest Rules" or he would never have thrown all those complete games on 2 days rest. And a good thing Nolan Ryan didn't know about all these new "pitch count" ceilings for todays little darlings. Reckon how many no-hitters, shut-outs, etc. Ryan would have been pulled from the mound in today's game. If they were really trying to save his career, the Nolan would have pitched till he was 60 years old. All these rest rules and pitch counts are just silliness that some people made up somewhere and now everyone believes them. There will never be records set like the complete games of Gibson and the no-hitters & strikeouts of Ryan because managers will not allow the young men to play enough innings to come close to them.
