Basketball player comparison. Players needed.

Feb 24, 2013, 9:39 AM

To help prove the point that Brownell has NO basketball
players only good athletes, look at yesterdays player comparison at the point guard position. Our point guard 27 minutes with 0 points and 7 turnovers. Marylands starting point guard 29 minutes, 18 points,0 turnovers.
You can do this every game at every position.
I think it is obvious to everyone that we don't have ACC caliber players. Again, he has athletes, but not players. He had better find some players or his time will be short. So far Roper looks like the only player.

That's been a typical problem for any coach at Clemson

Generally, Clemson always has good athletes rather than good basketball players (Sam Perry, Raymond Sykes). We don't have a great b-ball tradition, fan support (for b-ball), or top-flight facilities. I also think that basketball skills are not emphasized as much at the youth levels as they should be (FTs, passing, boxing out, etc.), so the pool of quality basketball players is smaller. Of course, getting the players is only half the battle. The other is getting them to play as a team and develop as players. The players have to want to get better, over which coaches have only so much control. So far, BB has done generally well in the teamwork and development areas (see Bobo) and is working on the recruiting/player quality issue (Roper, Coleman, Filer). This has been a tough season and losing Booker and Jennings will hurt down low, but I'm eager to see these young guys next fall with another off-season under their belts.

Thank you for a very good post.
You are so correct.Clemson has very good athletes, just no basketball players. We had that same problem with Purnell.
Look,no one,I hope ,is suggesting that we need to be heavily recruiting the high school all Americans who want to play for the DUKIES,or the TARHOLES ,but there should be some good skilled high schoolers who can play basketball.
Brad knows x's and o's and is a good recruiter. He just needs a little bit more time, but I agree his time will be short if he can't find kids who can play basketball, and are not just good athletes.

Recruiting is in the job description of the head coach.

There are things you can do to offset the talent gap in basketball. My problem with CBB is he's repeating the same thing that isn't working, this goes against good coaching philosophy. If you aren't winning using one scheme then maybe you should try something different. Couldn't hurt, i'm just saying. Take Virginia's full court press for instance...they didn't press in our first match up and we stomped them...it's called adjustments, didn't we get on Tommy B for not adjusting. I'm just saying...
