What must Brownell do this year to keep his job?

2

Oct 15, 2023, 6:14 PM

This is supposed to be THE year. The one he was brought back for after last year. So the question is, what must be accomplish this year in order to secure his place as the coach for the season after?

Obviously anything short of the NCAA tournament and he is gone. But is simply making the big dance good enough? Say we get in as a 8, 9 or lower seed and lose in the first round. That would be the pinnacle of the last few years of building? Would we want him to be in charge of another cycle of rebuild for that again?

I say we really need to have a great year. Like 6 seed or better or making a run to the Sweet 16 to show that the building was worth it.

He will have to move on on his own whenever he gets a better offer. Not thinking Neff is interested in moving on from Brownell. Been a die hard critic but I am hoping he does well while he wears the paw.

When your program has no goals, what are you going to use for the basis of firing him? He’s already failed to win a championship, failed to make the NCAA tournament on a consistent basis, failed to advance in the NIT last year. He’s basically accomplished nothing., So you’re going to fire him on accomplishing nothing again?. We’re stuck with him until he decides to leave. He’s basically a tenured government employee.

Win enough to satisfy the basketball donors.

Oct 15, 2023, 6:57 PM

It’s painfully obvious that the current basketball “powers that be” have no appetite to accept more than mediocrity for this team. Therefore, unless the season is a monumental failure. I.E., less than .500 record in conference and no post season invites, maybe he’ll be gone. However, the athletic department has accepted this criteria in as least four of his seasons.
Personally, I think given the poor football season we are having, this may put more pressure on him. Brownell may pay for Dabo’s poor performance, but, in hindsight, Dabo’s success has probably helped Brownell’s longevity to this point.
I’d like to think we should have higher expectations all the time, but that’s just not the case.

Depends on his buy-out(contract)-IF he has a bad year. We just MIGHT be pretty good this year. We have a good mix of players IF they can stay healthy.

Just wake up every morning that he's in Clemson, and do the same as he's done for the past 13 years, just have another of his mediocre seasons. That has seemed to be enough for those who writes his pay checks every season!!!

an early season must win, for sure.

The Fountain Inn home game on 1/5 looks like a barnburner, but better put that in the W column too.

And heaven's to Betsy, Southside at their place on 1/9. Gotta have it, Baby!!!

NCAA Tournament will be enough to keep his job.

1

Oct 16, 2023, 12:03 PM

That won't be enough to placate most of our "fans" though. We could win the national championship and many people would still be talking about how disappointing Brad's 2012-2013 season was or how it's ridiculous that he's been at Clemson so long.

Oct 16, 2023, 2:34 PM [ in reply to NCAA Tournament will be enough to keep his job. ]

The majority of Clemson fans were very excited about the sweet 16 run in 2018 and got behind the team.

And being that that was 5 years ago now, Brownell’s tenure had some more hope as he was not entrenched as long.

Clemson men’s basketball has not won an NCAA tournament game since.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Brownell will never come close to sniffing a championship.
