Loaded DB backfield

I feel like we have recruited extremely well at defensive back the last few cycles. There were definitely some under the radar type guys who should contribute big time this season. Hampton, Terrell, Lukus, Barnes, Strozier, Billings, Lewis, Gipson, Dixon, Wilkinson, Jones, Hanafin, Webb and Oliver make for a pretty deep and talented secondary. I also really like our nickels Barnes and possibly Crayton. I can’t wait to see what Allen can do with these guys in preparation for LSWho.

Barnes looked bad all year as did Terrell . Our defensive backs led the ACC in pass interference penalties . I am not confident that we actually have any depth back there and was hoping we would have added a portal safety . Hopefully we get more pressure this year from the front 4 and help our defensive backs .

Terrell actually played decent except for too many costly PI's but a lot of them were caused due to no pressure from DL on the QB. DBs can only cover so long if the QB is given time with no pressure.

Agree but we don’t have much if any depth back there that played any meaningful snaps last year . LSU will show us right out of the gate how good w we are on the defensive side of the ball .

Maybe if we got a little more pressure. We weren't awful, but we were 37th in the nation in sacks. That's not enough pressure. An you know there was only pressure from one side of the D line. We were 42nd in college football in 3rd down defense. Not enough pressure. Our DB's were dealing with a lot. We did well as far interceptions though. We were 14th in college football.

Barnes is better at Nickel.***

Agreed on Barnes, but I thought Terrell was good. Very competitive and more technically sound than our others corners. He's going to be a shutdown guy this year.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Too small, thus the PIs. Cant physically match up with big receivers.***

Looked bad because of crappy LB play and no pass rush...should be much improved this year.

Terrell was great last year…

That’s why he’s being projected as a 1st rounder for next year’s draft…

what? dont think you watched much last year. Terrell struggled mightily last year. No one in our secondary had anything close to a great year. When you have a true lock down corner, you never hear his name because offenses dotn throw his way much. With terrell, he was near the top of ACC in PI penalties because he was struggling and everyone was throwing his way. He is small and has a lot to prove this year to meet his expectations.

82.3 grade on PFF last year.

Listed as their 4th best returning CB.

Projected as a 1st round pick.

I don’t know man. Those things don’t add up and equal someone who “struggled mightily” last year.

You're either a Coot or you live your life in misery and negativity.
Well , both of those possibilities are a crossover anyway.
I don't think I have read a single post by you saying anything good about a Clemson sports team.

Please keep in mind, we had quite possibly the worst DC in the nation last year. This year we could have the best. That alone should bode well for improvement in all areas of defense. Gonna be fun!!

Depth at CB and S are both concerning.

Avieon, Hampton, Lukus and Shelton are a solid group of 4 at CB. If those 4 stay healthy, I believe they’ll have a great year. After them, it gets concerning.

Barnes, Griffin, Hanafin and Ricardo are a decent group of 4 at S. Not nearly as good as our first 4 CBs though. They’ll be the weakest part of our defense. And the depth behind them is also pretty concerning.

outside of Barnes this list does not invoke optimism. Hanafin ? we really needed to add some talent and experience to our safety depth chart to feel real good about this group. Barnes did not look good at safety last year and as you said is a much better nickle back.

CB room looks solid, I’m expecting big things out of Hampton.

Safety is the weakest position group on the Defense by far…we maybe should of picked up a portal guy for depth ( I would love to eat crow when the season comes along)

I think Hanafin will surprise us this year, especially with a full offseason to develop. He was a WR his first year. Bama recruited him as a DB. He’s athletic enough to play multiple positions in the secondary. Physical. Will be a great tackler.

Ricardo is also someone I expect to make a big jump in year 2. He certainly flashed as a freshman.

Plus, the front 7 will be much better, making the secondary’s job a lot easier.

Barnes and Griffin will start. I like Hanafin and Ricardo behind them. After them, I’m worried.
