The National Parks cuts lay bare the idiocy and/or evil of DOGE

Over 1,000 National Parks employees were fired by DOGE. The average salary of a ranger is, we could say, modest. Either way, not costing the taxpayers much in the grand scheme.
Here's where this specific case shows the problem with DOGE. The National Parks pumped $55 billion into the U.S. economy last year. For every $1 of taxpayer money invested in the NPS, the NPS returns $10. They're a boon to the economy. Thus, it would be nonsensical to cut jobs indiscriminately there. Especially since the one doing the cutting took $38 billion to set off expensive fireworks.
Elon and DOGE are either completely incompetent with these cuts, or they're intentionally cruel. There's no in between. It's good they're finally starting to get reined in.

People travel from all over the world to check out those parks. They stay in hotels in surrounding areas, stay in big cities, eat and drink etc etc. Those National Parks are no place to skimp. They are national treasures anyway.

That's 5% of their workforce. If reducing their workforce by that small amount results in the end of the National Parks as we know it then whoever is in charge is incompetent and needs to be replaced.

It shows the cuts are being made without thought behind them, or that they're just being made to be a jack ###. That's not good decision making, and brings the other cuts into question.

The people that work in the parks were already claiming they actually needed more people and not less.

They were saying it before the cuts. They wanted more funding and more man power.

If there's 4 people collecting money as you drive into Yellowstone, and they really only need 3 - then get rid of someone. It's not cruelty, it's common sense.
(By saying that - I don't mean to imply common sense is being used. I just also don't agree that it's cruel to get rid of someone who is not needed.)

Expect park closures, longer lines, and less kept spaces.

don't agree with the premise of "cutting folks with modest salaries doesn't help much, so why do it?"
I do know that government jobs were the 2nd highest job growth sector in 2024 - so I agree that cuts likely need to be made in some places.

She wasn't just some yo-yo... She had her doctorate. This occurred LONG before Trump or DOGE...
I don't agree with cutting their funds. Heck, one of the best government programs ever was the CCC that built most of those parks.
They DO need better oversight and accountability. As to 'Parks", they are the reason I have an Airstream, both state and national.

The history of it needs reviewing. I agree as to the the subordinates. It's the management that's responsible for the abuse.
