Go uphill to the top of the Plaka

There is a tapberna up there that has a small sign on the door and is a hole in the wall. It's on a corner. I forget the name, it's Greek to me. When you walk in there's a mural painted on the wall of a bunch of guys drinking retsina. Just tell them you knew George Savakis. He's the guy who painted the mural. You will see a lot of murals painted in tapbernas across the Plaka that he painted. Order a Greek salad and some retsina. Their octupus is excellent as well. You will not find many tourists there. All locals with only the occasional x-pat. If you want an authentic experience it's a neat place. I'll send some pics later.

It is at the very top of the Plaka though. Walk uphill as far as you can go and you will be close.

This was 20+ years ago, so no clue if it's still there now. George Savakis is dead, but every guy at this table was over 80 years old.

Top pic is a painting of his I have in my house today, which matches many of the murals he painted in the tapbernas.

Backstory: Mom had to pee. She walked in this place looking for a restroom. We decided to stay there to eat lunch. There was a table of older guys eating and they sent us over a bottle of retsina. My dad then told the waiter to go get them a bottle of scotch. Dad had no clue retsina is cheap wine. Anyway, they got the scotch bottle and invited us over. Every person at the table was over 80 years old. We thought they were in their 60's and 70's. The short guy in the middle of the table with the garnet beret was George Savakis, who was the only one who spoke English well. That's him in the picture, and the mural on the wall behind him he painted.

Anyway, was a neat place, and even neater people.

Some of this murals. His style was marked by bright colors, tabepna scenes mostly. BTW, retsina is a common greek table wine that's fermented in pine barrels, giving it a smokey flavor. Very unique.
