Learned last nite my Brothers wife is in hospice at home

Late 2023 she had bad medical situation but after some time she recovered but mild dementia set in.
She improved but was never her pre-2023 self. She started going downhill a month or so ago but a week ago stopped eating.
She mumbled to my Bro she wanted to go home.
Hospice chaplain visited yesterday and told my Bro it would only be a few days.
Her daughter is in the home, i will be going down tomorrow.

I mentioned years ago that my brother was a boat captain and one of the best fishermen on SC coast. When rich guys would buy 30ft+ Contender off-shore boats from TailWalker Marine, they often had no clue how to operate them or troll fish. My brother was often “hired” to take the boats out and educate the owners. He never took a dime from any of them. He would accept favors like race tickets, etc.

My brother met his wife at Tailwalker. It was a match made in fishing heaven.

but after watching both my parents die from brutal cancers, I feel like you just get so tired from the battle, much like your SIL that you are just ready to rest. It's not that you "want" to die, it's just you are so tired, it's time to figure out what is next, because what is next isn't here.

I feel this way about suicide. I think people get so tired, well really exhausted with the depression, anxiety or whatever addiction they have, and they only think the way out is just to see what is next.

It's sad.

When it comes to older folks, we seemingly give our pets

more dignity than we do people. I know it isn't apples to apples but if pets can tell us it is time go go, people ought to be able to as well. Certain conditions need to be met of course, but it an old or very sick person is ready, don't make them suffer out the last days.

once every three years that covers addiction, depression, anxiety, etc. One of the best ones I ever saw was a really accomplished lawyer who described his bout with depression. He was making more money than anyone in his family had ever made in a year, he was well-respected and accomplished. He was standing on a balcony in Hilton Head trying to decide if the fall would kill him or only maim him. I had always considered suicide a very selfish act, an abandonment of your loved ones who need you, but the way he explained his thinking in that moment was that you have become so down on yourself, so disgusted with yourself, that in your head, you KNOW that everyone will be better off without you. You KNOW that your death might make people sad, but you also KNOW in your heart at that moment that once the grief subsides, everyone will have a better life without you screwing it up. It was eye-opening.

Everyone that helped with my dad and then my wife were excellent.

My wife's mother was obviously dying and we were all watching it. My wife had set up hospice care in advance in the event that her death was prolonged. But she was in a normal room and it was very clear to everyone that she was dying right before our eyes and had maybe minutes left. I was hugging my wife and showing her the decreased pulse and respirations as they were measured on the machines hooked up to her mother. Her mother was loaded up with pain drugs, so she was just slowly, painlessly passing on.

In walks a hospital administrator who says they want to move her to a hospice room, can you sign this paperwork. I took her outside the room and pointed out that you could see she had minutes left and would probably die on the way to the other room. She kept insisting that we sign up to have her moved and I kept refusing. Minutes later, she passed peacefully where she was. it occurred to me that they wanted her to sign up for the room so they could bill Medicare for the service.

Above all else, love and forgive. Understand that people who disagree with you are not necessarily idiots or your enemies. Respect the wisdom of the founding fathers and individual rights and freedoms. Always see the beauty and humor in life.
