considered illegal in the state of South Carolina and they will join Ohio as the first two states
to install this ban! The species has been labeled as invasive, thorny, and crowd out other species!
Already planted trees are not illegal, there will just be a ban on their sale!!

Most folks don’t keep them trimmed. If you just let them go it’s definitely going to split. Look good when maintained but maintaining can be a lot of work.

I planted 8 of these trees along the dirt road on my property in late 1980s. I have never pruned them. They are all very large, and the only one that has had any problem is one that got hit by farm equipment going by. They are still beautiful when blooming and in the fall. Looking back on the problems with other fruit bearing pears, I would not have planting them if I knew that then. As to the reason that I have not had them split...I have assume it is because they are planted close to the treeline, which means they are shielded from high winds from some directions. They are about 100 yds from the house, so never really had a problem with the smell!

Not mentioned in the OP, one of the reasons they are being banned is the adverse effect they have on pear trees that produce fruit. They actually cross pollinate, and the resulting seeds produce an inedible fruit. Those who have both trees in the vicinity (like me, I planted my Bradfords in 1988, and they are still beautiful when they bloom and in the fall... and I have bearing pear trees), need to make sure that the pears from their trees are not allowed to seed and grow trees.

Malls and Central Business Districts loved to plant those things back in the 80's mall boom in their parking lots planters. I believe Haywood Mall in Greenville removed all theirs some years back.

A wind storm wiped out a beautiful maple in front of my house. I'm planning to sell my house here in GA this year and move back to the Clemson area. I think I'll put a couple of Bradfords in the front yard and leave them behind for my nosy across the street neighbor to smell.

More states need to join in.
The most invasive species,with some still available for purchase. There are suitable native species or non-invasive substitutes for all of these.
english ivy
wisteria
barberry (also hosts deer ticks)
butterfly bush
Purple loosestrife (clogs streams and creeks)
Japanese honeysuckle
bittersweet
Japanese Knotweed (some invaded our flower beds, can take years to get rid of)
Common Buckthorn
burning bush
giant hogweed ("contact with its sap can cause terribly painful burns, scarring, and even blindness")
Most were introduced to US gardens by well-meaning botanists in the late 19th century.
You kids get off my Japanese knotweed. Go play in your own kudzu !

Bradford pears have no thorns. They r grafted trees. The thorn come from the under stock to which the Bradford is grafted. Been growing and selling for years but I’m even glad to see them go. Splitting can be controlled by pruning. Most wait to late to control them. Horticulture lesson Class of 1965. That’s all

They are crappy trees and I'm glad they are being banned.
On the other hand there are the Sweetgum trees that were planted on the entrance to the Greenville Spartanburg airport. I am pretty sure that they were specified in the landscape plans prepared by an "above the Mason Dixon line" Landscape Architecture firm!
