I was definitely wrong about Norvell at F$U.

Dec 9, 2022, 8:50 AM

I really was not high on Norvell to begin the season. He and his team proved me wrong, and they are a force to be reckoned with. Norvell can recruit and he is using the portal well. If he pulls in Joheim Bell to add to the already talented players he has, F$U will be a tough team for years to come.

Makes me happy that the F$U and Clemson rivalry game will mean something again soon. Also, with the new ACC Championship game rules, we could play F$U in the championship game.

Men at 25 play football. Men at 40 play tennis. Men at 60 play golf. Have you noticed as men get older their balls get smaller.

Regardless of the on-field results I get the suspicion Norvell is not a class act.

We'll see how things pans out, but it certainly looks like he's get them heading in a positive direction. I think we're a ways away from them being on equal footing, but then again if Clemson keeps heading in the same direction we have over the past 2 seasons you might be right sooner rather than later.

I just heard an interview with their QB and you could

hear him just gush about his coach. It wasn't the fake gush, it was tearing up gush. Not just a coach but a mentor. I suspect he's the real deal.

We were 10-3 last year and have already won 11 this year with a top 10 recruiting class and what looks like we are engaged with the portal so would you agree the trend is up? If so what direction were you speaking of?

I don't get how a top 10 team that won 11 games is trending down. There is no team in the NCAA that makes the playoffs every year. We are trending in the right direction, and we will be back to the playoffs very soon.

Yeah...if we are not back in the playoffs when they expand to 12 teams, then we may have a bigger problem than a down year or two.

Either way... FSU will be ready for us next season.
Our defense has a lot of holes to fill (depending on who comes back).
Luckily we get them in the valley but it will be a good game for sure.

Dec 9, 2022, 9:25 AM

I agree. I know I still had a bad taste in my mouth about the whole 2020 game that didn’t happen and that was really my first impression of him. My opinion of FSU had historically been that it was a school that didn’t care much about player discipline or rules or academics (sorry Bret) but they always attracted great athletes. I do think Norvelle is trying to instill some discipline into their program and I have a ton of respect for that. I hope they give him time to make a difference and we all know winning will help him get more time.

My impression of Norvell.

Dec 9, 2022, 9:46 AM

He has exceeded my expectations, and I was optimistic about him when he was hired. (But, after going through the last 2 years of Jimbo and the 2 year debacle of Taggart, anything would have been an improvement.)

Norvell has definitely changed the culture of the team. The guys genuinely love and trust each other. when you talk to a RB, for example, he normally brags on "our room" (meaning the RB group). Same with any other position group.

Norvell has done as good a job as anybody over the past two years in bringing in and developing talent through the portal. But, he knows you can't build a program where 15 of your 22 starters (I think that is what it was this year) come through the portal. He knows he has to improve the talent coming from HS. Last year was better than the year before, but not good enough. His goal is to build the team through HS recruiting, then cherry pick 2 or 3 guys to meet specific needs through the portal. This year, however, we need to recruit 7 to 9 guys who can step in and contribute in the Spring.

Concern is that the defensive staff aren't good recruiters. Alex Atkins, OL and OC, is apparently the rising star - both in developing talent (look how much better our OL was this year than last) and in recruiting. No one else on the staff is considered even a good recruiter, much less a great recruiter.

FSU still does not have the depth of Clemson. But, it is good enough to compete with anybody on the schedule next year.

Norvell's offense, however it is described, is one that all the players - RB, WR, TE, OL, QB love. He figures out a way to "get the ball to playmakers so they can make plays."

FSU also has two NIL collectives that seem to be doing a great job in competing with other schools and what they can offer. One of the collectives has said their focus is on retention, not recruiting. They want to keep guys at FSU from entering the portal or going early to the NFL.

Jordan Travis is coming back. He signed on with this collective.
Trey Benson is coming back. He signed on with this collective.
Both starting CBs did as well.
4th string RB, a true freshman who many thought might head to the portal in search of more playing time, also signed with this collective and is returning.

Jared Verse and Fabian Lovett, 2 best DL, have not made any decision public yet. Verse is almost a certain 1st round pick. Lovett is probably a 2-3 round pick. Verse has already said he's playing in the bowl game. It would be great if either one of them came back and HUGE if both did. (It would be roughly the equivalent of Bresee and Henry both coming back to Clemson).

Gotta admit, it's nice to see FSU have some fight in them

Dec 9, 2022, 10:30 AM

Would be great to have a conference with two perennial elite programs in it again.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

i'd just assume they stunk

FSU, NC, Tenn, UGA even coots all having a resurgence isn't good for Clemson

It just means we will be pushed to become even more competitive. All boats can rise with this tide. I actually think things getting more competitive will be good for us and we will rise to meet that occasion.

Re: i'd just assume they stunk

Dec 11, 2022, 2:24 PM [ in reply to i'd just assume they stunk ]

I couldn't care less about the success of any SEC teams (except Vanderbilt, just because it would be rich to see them upset everyone's season over and over again). UT, UGA, and *especially* SCar could all go 0-12 and I'd be the happier for it.

But I'm in the camp that thinks iron sharpens iron. I get tired of playing weak and/or inconsistent competition every year. It makes games boring, if nothing else. I mean, don't get me wrong, I do like blowouts; but it's a lot of fun to have those heartstoppers every now and then. To that effect I'd like to see four to fix strong, CONSISTENT teams in the conference every year. The (now-)Coastal teams really need to step up because that whole division has been a dumpster fire for years. But otherwise I'd think it wouldn't be that hard to get an elite tier going--Clemson, FSU, Miami, VT...even UNC, Pitt, and Syracuse have rich football traditions to some extent. (I'd include NC State but they're kind of like SCar--their "traditions" are never more than a few years old. I'm just fine with them being the SCar of the Tarheel State.)

I may have been wrong about him, too. Thought he was another failure.

Glad to see them good again, though. It’s good for college football and the ACC.

Still something seems weird about Norvell. But I don’t know.

Hope they kick OU’s a$$ and finish in the top 10.

Dec 9, 2022, 11:03 AM

All it took was watching what his teams did before he got to FSU and then his FSU team to know he was the right person for the job. We have our hands full with FSU and maybe the days of great games with FSU are coming back which is great for the fans and the ACC.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

As Jordan Travis goes, so goes FSU

Dec 9, 2022, 11:47 AM

If he stays healthy they will be a force to reckon with. If he goes down, who knows.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I don't care if he turns out to be the 2nd Coming of Knute

Dec 9, 2022, 11:55 AM

Rockne, he will never get a pass from me for that punk a$$ last second game cancellation during COVID. He should have just taken his Butt Whooping like a man, instead of hiding behind Covid's skirt.

Other than that, he also seems to have the same punchable face as Joe Burreaux.

Beyond that, don't really care one way or the other about him.

:)

Nice point about acccg

That would lend the game and the league some more prestige and credibility

Too much dependent on short-term transfers from the portal - not developing his players enough through normal recruiting - Not impressed with him at all!

He is doing it right using portals. I’m sure he would like to not use portal guys but it is the only way he can win games now. Wow he had some great ones this year. What about the go to could not stop TE from Arizona? That probably cost a pretty penny

Wait until they actually break ground on their new $75M FB facility. Supposed to open in 2024 or 2025 so they can already sell it, but nothing like an active construction site to really sell the recruits.
