Are they misstating Seneca River?

My understanding is the Seneca and Tugaloo are dammed to form Hartwell. So in the news reports about the crash, are they actually talking about swimming across the moat? As many times as I've been down there, I have no idea what body of water they're talking about.

It is the old Seneca river bed, whick is reduced to the "moat" by damming, etc.

Yes. The moat around the football facilities is technically the seneca river, I believe.

If the dikes weren't built, the practice fields and part of DV would be under water

and if it weren't for some huge pumps the practice fields and death valley would still be under water.

where the Seneca River used to flow before the lake was built. It is not a natural body of water anymore, it is campus storm drainage. Entire campus collects to there.

built when the dykes were being built to save Clemson's campus.
It was left after the lake was filled up.

Dikes not been built, the lake would have essentially come up to within a hundred yards of Calhoun Mansion.

Don't know about the accident, but a river does not cease to be a river because it is dammed up. I know the bridge over Hartwell going toward Seneca from Clemson had and maybe still has a sign "Seneca River."

Here is a map to help clear up the River/Moat question...

IT IS BEST DEFINED AS THE OLD SENECA RIVER CHANNEL...
The original plan in creating Lake Hartwell was to flood all areas below 660 feet in elevation, which would have impacted many of Clemson University's experimental agricultural fields and also put part of Clemson's Death Valley Football Stadium under water. To avoid this problem, two large earthen dams (usually referred to as 'dikes') were built to cut off the existing Seneca River Channel and keep the rising water off Clemson land, and a brand new channel for the Seneca River was cut through a lower section of land farther west of campus.

Great explanation and that map is really helpful. I know a river doesn't cease to exist if it's dammed, I just thought it was funny they referred to the static moat as a river.

If you go to historicaerials.com, you can see what the route of the Seneca river used to be like in 1947 and 1959 before Lake Hartwell was formed.

Where does the water in moat drain to now? Is it pumped up to Lake Hartwell?
