In 2016, Alabama was the undisputed greatest team of all time! Why? Because everyone knew that “no one was beating Bama.” It was simply common knowledge among any sensible person with knowledge of college football.
It took 99 offensive plays – but Clemson forever changed 2016’s Bama place in history ... and Clemson’s place as well!
Perhaps the talking heads who anointed Bama as “unbeatable” felt they had reason for their confidence in Bama’s imminent 15-0 championship season. According to Al.com:
“The Tide was a ruthless bunch with an angry front seven that pounded opponents into submission and an offense that ran through defenses. Before the season began, Alabama was seen as the team to beat. It was ranked No. 1 and wouldn't budge from the top spot until that last fateful second against Clemson. Right out of the gate, it stomped USC in the opener, beating the Trojans, 52-6. A month later, it crushed ninth-ranked Tennessee in Knoxville by 39 points, treating Josh Dobbs like a pinata before lighting victory stogies and posing for photos.
The Tide carried on like marauding bandits, showing no mercy as it tore through the SEC while thumping Mississippi State, Auburn and Florida in the SEC Championship game. Along the way, Alabama pulled off some remarkable feats. There was the flying sack by Allen as he launched himself into Texas A&M quarterback Trevor Knight. There were the three non-offensive touchdowns that helped Alabama stage a 21-point comeback and secure a victory on the road against Ole Miss. There was the shutout the Tide pitched in LSU's Death Valley.

Even the NY Times looked back on that 2016 Alabama team as Bama’s best:

That great Bama defense started the national title game strong. They went after Clemson QB Deshaun Watson with a fierce tenacity – thinking Watson would wilt over the course of the game!
Saban had not lost a National Title game. Bama led 24-14 going into the 4th Quarter. Bama had dominated 4th Quarters all season. What’s more: Under Saban, Bama was 97-0 (not a typo) when leading by 10+ in the 4th Quarter. All good for the greatest team ever, right?

A team that stormed through its competition, that defeated all but one of its first 14 opponents by at least ten points, that scored 15 non-offensive touchdowns, that led the nation in sacks and scoring defense, that had ten players drafted later that year...will never be celebrated as a champion because of what Watson and Clemson did.”
