Anybody Got a Breakdown

of how often the Tiger Offense has seen 2+ deep safeties? It feels like every snap. In the past, that was a sign of fear of the deep shots. These days it seems more like a lack of fear of the run game. Seems odd given most teams and talking heads shout about taking away the run game first. Defenses normally do that by stacking the box and playing 1 high safety or at least walking one of them down on the snap.

I don't think it's lack lack of respect for the run game. I think its a lack of respect for our wide receivers. What I notice is OLB’s sneaking into the box because teams do not respect the flats and our perimeter blocking ability. They have the luxury of keeping 2 safeties back because they don't fear our wr’s making plays in space in the flats.

I think Duke’s strategy was to keep the ball in front of them and pray we would make mistakes and turn it over. It worked very well, and every team has copied the template very well.

Until the WR’s & TE get better at blocking we are going to see the same look.

I think we would be an elite running team with average perimeter blocking.

PFF backs all this up. They score Briningstool as one of the worst blocking TE’s in the ACC. And the WR blocking is definitely below average.

Nice analysis. Thanks for the discussion. This is why I come to T-Net.

Good example. Ship had a nice run to the outside. Gained about 15, 20 yards but if Collins makes his block, Ship might have scored. Jmho, beaux would have come out the game because it's not a one off.

Add to your analysis a less than average oline and any good team will continue to shut us down and/or force mistakes.

Thanks again. Great post by all.

Conjecture, as is much here, but Clemson has a QB...

that has shown some immaturity, a tendency to get anxious and make some poor decisions because of it, whether antsy in the pocket, leaving a play too soon or putting the ball at risk trying to make something happen that might not be there.

By playing shell, Tampa 2, 2 High or 1/3rds, et al a defense hopes to make an offense play patiently, forcing longer drives, underneath throws, running the ball, taking away deep shots, which in turn hopes to create the impatience above in the QB, by extension the O and team.
