Daughter rented a Tesla Model S for homecoming. We picked it up in a rainstorm, didn't notice all the flaws. Tires were bald, one actually blew out. And when i say bald, i mean belts showing.
None of the cool "tesla" stuff worked on the car. Obvious it had been in a wreck, probably several.
The second day, right before homecoming, car completely dies. Fried computer, would not start.
Sat in our driveway for 2 days before they picked it up on the tow truck.
Owner tried to blame us at first, then she agreed car had issues, then she disappeared. TURO would not give a refund without her permission.
This went on for about a month, i finally threatened to bring legal action, then we finally got the refund.
By the way, if you have any issue, TURO has NO customer service. Not sure the company even has an office.

for a 2019 GMC Yukon and the car wouldn't go over 55 mph. Owners tried to avoid giving a refund because we could've turned off valet mode from the dash. Wife recorded the phone call we made to them asking for the password to get to the unlock settings in the dash and they refused to give it to us. Returned the car to our driveway and went to Budget. Ended up getting a refund after about 3 months of back and forth with Turo customer service.
Kinda like AirBnB. It's going to be hit or miss with these kinds of sites.

Pick people with a meaningful number of good reviews.
Filter down to people who will meet where you want at no or low charge. Screw someone who wants $100 to bring car to airport.
Pick people who offer the $20 prepaid cleaning option and don’t sweat cleaning the car up when done.
Look through rental history. Someone with more than a couple reservation cancellations should be disregarded.
Photograph the car from all angles when you pick it up.
