someone says "Thank you for your service" when you were drafted into the military instead of signing up on your own? I never know whether to say "You're welcome" or something else.

I wasn’t drafted, however I don’t tell people I was in the military/retired or wear identifying hats/clothes etc. Only my inner circle knows I served and I keep that small, so very rarely do I hear it and I prefer it that way!

Your icon is a purple heart and you expect us to believe you keep you military affiliation secret?
I'm callin' bs. I'd venture to say you have at least two stickers indicated you were very aligned with the military on your F-150.
PS. thank you for your service

As long as you didn't flea to Canada or something, I'd say you served your country when asked and that you've absolutely earned the right to accept their "thank you". So I'll say thank you for your service to our country and for defending our freedoms.

Thank you for your service. Regardless of how you ended up serving. I volunteered and don’t see a difference between the two.

He came home very jaded, never celebrated Christmas in the traditional sense again. If his service ever came up in conversation, he would just say "The government paid me to kill communists. So that's what I did" Never anything more.

You still went and served and protected our country, unlike some well known cowards that dodged the draft. So thank you from the bottom of my heart for serving even if it wasn't your choice. Because of the brave, we are free.

I'm only 53, so wasn't around for much of the Vietnam era, and don't really remember the parts where I was around, but I know that not everyone who was drafted served, and most who served did so with very little, if any, appreciation from those back home. I can get how it might be uncomfortable, but I would just tell them Thank You in return for being appreciative of the sacrifices of those who have served.

I wasn't drafted but I am retired Army, Clover, but my response is as simple as it can be. I say thank you. But all the while I am thinking of a John Le Carre quote from one of his books, "Nothing can ever bridge the gap between those who went and those who didn't". Anyway, thank you for your service, Clover.

Love this question. Personally, I appreciate every man and woman who has served in our military, especially those who didn’t have a choice. Lot of folks in the US really have lost healthy perspective on what it takes to maintain democracy and simply how well we live here. Those Americans who take for granted what we have should go to the Ukraine and talk with those folks about what it feels like to not be a world power.
Personally, I say thank you largely because my step father fought in Vietnam and too many good people who served in wars weren’t appreciated, and sometimes were treated poorly. History can teach us a lot if we listen and learn from it.
To anyone who served, please say whatever you feel is right. You earned it. You served your country in a way many of us will never know.
I know this is a football board. I appreciate OP and the question. People caring about and serving our country is some of what allows me to spend (arguably too much) time watching and worrying about Clemson football. Feels fortunate and blessed to spend that kinda time on college football. Go Tigers!

It's one thing to volunteer to serve, but its completely different being told you have to serve. There is no greater honor than putting your life the on the line for your country and doing it without volunteering is truly first class.

I volunteered at 17 years old and I had many friends who were drafted and many that were NG. My opinion is no matter how you served whether it was combat or another important mission, you did what you were told to do and where to go. My salute is to all veterans no matter what Branch of service or title and I say Thank-you for your service.

Of recognition. He was an Iraq war combat vet who had lost members of his team in battle. I believe he was struggling with survivor’s guilt, so any time there was an event to celebrate the military he opted out. I have no personal frame of reference to help me understand how someone who has been through battle feels and what they continue to carry with them. Your feelings are your own and if you don’t want to be singled out then I’ll try to show my thanks by respecting that wish.

And did a great job supporting and providing for his family. Even though that’s the duty and obligation of a father, he appreciates me saying thanks every now and again. But like I said before it’s not my right to tell you how you should feel so I’ll try to respect your wishes. I guess the tough part is to determine who is and who isn’t comfortable with thanks.

@clover65. I never served but am curious as to why you would not want a thank you of appreciation. Like I said I did not serve and was just wondering if there is a part of it a civilian can not comprehend when it comes to this.
I’m a quiet guy myself for the most part and do not care to be recognized but is this something most men and women who served feel about “thank you.”

9/11. Since I finished my active and reserve time (28 years 14 active) in 1992, I was often mocked for my service. I often took vacation time for my 2 weeks annual training even though by law I wasn't required to use vacation for it.
The biggest challenge with an all volunteer force has been, since WWII we have not been trying to win a war (unconditional surrender). The repetitive combat tours is very hard on military families.
Don't feel uncomfortable you have earned that "THANK YOU." I reply "It was my privilege."

I also volunteered, going into the Marine Corps, and like a previous posy, the timing of my government paid trip to Viet Nam wasn't perfect (it never is). My mother dropped me off at the Atlanta airport on Christmas Day 1970. I returned about the same time, so one Christmas was much better than the the other. When people thank me for my service, which I truly appreciate, I always think of an interview with airline captain Chesley Sullenberger who landed his plane in the Hudson River and saved all of his passengers. He said when someone called him a hero, and although he didn't feel like one, he would not disappoint them by correcting them or making them feel uncomfortable by calling him a hero. I feel the same way. I may say that "it was my pleasure to serve, thank you".

Basic Training and a couple of girls and one of them said she had never met a "hero" before. I was sort of stunned into silence and later told my friend what my thoughts were about her comment - what I wanted to say to her was "And you still haven't met one".

I have often wondered if that made some veterans uncomfortable. I am not a veteran but many family members were. I am uncomfortable approaching a stranger and saying something like that just because I don’t know how they will take it. The last thing I want to do is make someone uncomfortable or bring up bad memories when actually trying to do the opposite. I think it just shows how we are all different in our views and opinions and needs and desires. And that is great. Some people seek recognition and others basically feel like they did their job and what was expected of them. That is why I am uncomfortable approaching a stranger in this way. I have no idea what will make that person comfortable or uncomfortable and until I get to know them I will refrain from saying much of anything that could be uncomfortable to them. Just trying ti be respectful of their feelings. Clover, I will say I was happy to meet you recently and respect your posts and consider you the type of person I would like to call a friend.

The one thing that kept me from enlisting
Nov 11, 2022, 2:05 PM
|
|
was seeing how some people called those who did enlist “crazy” back in those days. A guy on my hall in ‘68 joined the Marines & dropped out of school because he felt like he should be in Nam if others were there. Guys on the hall called him crazy but I guess a lot of them were just in college to stay away from the draft

I'm pretty low key with my service connection. I think most people are well intentioned so I just say thank you and move on. I don't believe any of them want to hear anything other than that.
