They told us so...

Before this season started, FSU, Alabama, Oregon and Oklahoma were the top 4 teams in college football.
Because ESPN told us so.
Ole Miss was around 17-18 and Miss St was just another one of those also mentioned in the AP and USA Today polls.
USuC (#9 preseason cuz ESPN said so) made TA&M look like a NFL Madden powerhouse and vaulted the Aggies to #6 after they beat mighty Arkansas as well, setting the stage for most of the SEC West to dominate the top ten in all the polls.
As always, ESPN saw the dollar signs when Ole Miss beat Bama and the SEC West parade when into full swing. When Bama fell all the way to #7 after that loss, it justified the SEC West as the premier division in college football.
LSU, on the strength of beating Wisconsin (exposed vs OSU), vaulted to #8 so when Miss St beat them, TA&M (#6) and Auburn (#2) in consecutive weeks, a team that was an afterthought in the preseason polls was all of a sudden the #1 team in the country.
So basically, we ended up with teams (Ole Miss and Miss St) that rose to the top on wins over massively overrated opponents based on the misguided rankings early in the year.
Ole Miss' "any given saturday" win over Bama justified their own meteoric rise but when the rebels started losing (inexplicably) to now #23 LSU, now #19 Auburn and (gasp) unranked Arkansas in a shutout, the rankers (committee) quietly overlooked that misdeed and shuffled the rebels all the way back out to #19.
But wait, Miss St then lost to (gasp) Ole Miss, so they must have been wrong all along and Ole Miss is indeed as good as they thought and the losses to LSU, Auburn and Arkansas were anomalies. So back up to #9 they go!
But wait, Miss St can't be worse than Ole Miss, despite the loss. After reviewing the earlier games (against the anomalies) Miss St is actually 2 spots better than Ole Miss (despite losing to them a week prior)
So all that being said, why is there so much confusion over the rankings?
I don't get it

So what do yall suggest be done about it?
Have no rankings or polls until last 4 weeks? Have POC removed and teams voted in by coaches or fans?
I see what youre saying, but do yall not agree that no matter how its done, someone will get left out and someone will cry foul?

Maybe a rule that says If you were ranked lower than a team 1 week while both being idle, you cannot jump that team the following week?
just sayin...

Hmm...maybe...not until after this Ferguson stuff settles down...Wouldn't want people getting wrong impression...
We could make/wear "I can't see" T-shirts...maybe Lebron and some other athletes could wear them in support

Thank you for this well researched and thought out post. TV and especially EsecPN has really hurt college football. It indeed goes back to the love of money and the colleges willingness to be dictated to for the $$$.

Lets stage a protest. Wouldn't take much to convince J Winston to help loot and set fires.

Your right on target.

Ole miss beats MissSt and Bama, yet remains ranked behind them. Meanwhile, MissSt loses to ole miss and the 1# team but is somehow ranked ahead oh Miss!!???!!
I think ole miss should have beaten auburn and also lost their best playmaker in the process thus creating a hangover effect vs Aky.

ESPN has been telling us since before the season started and during that certain teams deserve higher rankings. That is a given.
AP made up of sportswriters that have to cover their own beats and likely have very little time to see other teams, coaches are a bit busy on Saturdays.
We've had this discussion before here. THe answer is still the same.
ESPN controls the rankings.
